bernarada
I just bought a 7200rpm USB 3 external HD to run my Logic's projects, while I'm also—slowly—getting into making home videos of my acoustic guitar music. What is best ? Making two partitions on it, one for Logic and one for FCP, or leaving it as is, differentiating the two simply by the folders' names ? Thanks, B. Eric Cardenas
Leave it as it is. Partitioning the drive has no performance benefits.
bernarada
Thanks Eric. That's what I thought. While I'm at it, a few more things—if you or anyone has a minute to respond to them. . . I understand that I need to make an habit from now on, with all my projects, of "saving as" with all their assets in the new external HD so that the OS HD and Logic and that external HD work together. That said, when I do that "saving as", the only option the finder gives me is the external HD as a whole and, try as I may, I can't find a way to point to a folder called Logic that I created on it, to make that folder appear as an option. Is there a way to do that ? If not, it's fine, then I can just drag each Logic projects/packages in it, yet it would be simpler if I could save them straight away in that folder, from the finder, when I save them. Another thing. I recently bought the Macbook Pro I now use, and installed in it a 500G SSD. And while I already bought a 1TB 7200rpm HD to use externally, I came across posts here and there that argued that, as an SSD as no mechanical parts operating the way a spinning HD does, it's fine to use it for everything, performance wise—or something along those lines. Is that true ? Does the use of an SSD renders obsolete the advantage of separating tasks between the internal drive with the OS and Logic and an external drives with the projects ? Thanks, B. Eric Cardenas
1. There is a triangle you can click on that opens up more options. You should even be able to create folders from that window. 2. Yes, it's true. You can basically use the SSD for everything if you want. The only downside is available space.
bernarada
Thanks again, Eric. About the SSD, now, that's a game changer. So. . . If it can be figured out, can we say that doing everything on/from the SSD is simply faster than using an external drive ? Because if that's so, and the only question is space, then I could use the SSD one project at a time and use the 7200rpb 1TB I bought as the place where I only keep/store all the projects, not where I work from.
