oakmoon
I make great recording no changes everything fine. Then one day I simply open to listen and tracks are deleted or replaced by other tracks. I make no changes. Two seperate Keyboard tracks (harmony parts) are now a duplicate of just one track. What happen to the other one ? Message as I open "Invalid region changed" with can't find audio file - a number of which was long ago deleted. Is this my external hard drive ? WD Workbook ? I save as a project and save as I record.
David Nahmani
Is this my external hard drive ? WD Workbook ? As much as I really don't see how that could be a hard drive problem, you're the second or third person reporting that problem with external WD drives. . . How about working on the system drive for a while, see if the problem goes away? Really sorry to hear about your issue, it sucks having that kind of problem, especially when you see everybody else around not having it! I'm sure you'll solve it in time. oakmoon
Thx for your response, here's a little more info Regions 51 and 52 are in the arrange wiindow. They are also listed as audio files on the ext HD. When I open the song an error message says can't find audio file #35 and 36 (these files long ago deleted and new recorded#51 and 52 in its place). So I choose to manually look and I find my missing file # 51 and 52. So I choose to use in place of the audio files 35 and 36 ( don't want those anyways, but when I open song it does not play the regions 51 and 52- the ones I chose to use. How do I access those audio files ? also I initially save as a project, do I need to save as a project each time or simply just save ?
David Nahmani
just save.... ooh I understand your mistake! (it sounds like it's simply pilot error after all ). A region is just a pointer on an audio file. Example: you need to record a guitar riff bar 4 through 9. You go to bar 1, press record, start singing and press stop around bar 10. Then you resize the region so it only spans bar 4 through 9. So on your hard drive, you have an audio file, which is the complete recording from bar 1 to bar 10. But in the Logic song, the only information is the region: it tells Logic "play audio file voice recording" from sample #78264 to sample #892748". If you delete the audio file from the Finder (which you should never do), the next time you open Logic, it has an "invalid region": it can't find the audio file voice recording on your hard drive, since you deleted it. It asks you if you want to locate it manually. At that point, if you choose another audio file, that's the audio file it's going to play from sample #78264 to sample #892748 - which probably won't make much musical sense at all! So never manage your audio files from the Finder. Manage them from Logic. Delete the regions from the arrange, and delete the audio files from the audio window. And no, you don't need to save as a project everytime, just once. Then you use File > Save. Does that make sense?
oakmoon
That makes sense but I always delete my regions from the arrange window. With Logic open I simply highlight/select the region and delete using computer keyboard. I never use the finder drop down menu. Maybe inadvertently ? I suppose but I don't know how since I have to always click the window or background I am on to make any changes, whether its Finder, Text edit or whatever I am working on. Thx. David Nahmani
From the Arrange window, you delete the Region, but usually not the Audio File (unless you delete a region right after recording it and choose "delete" in the following dialog). If you use project folders there should be no reason to lose track of an audio file unless you voluntarily delete it.
oakmoon
I delete regions after I record so I do not have a build up of files I cannot find. I save after I have a recording I like. My song unexpectedly opened with the right regions just now and played perfectly. I closed and tried to re-open and now I cannot open the song at all. It gets stuck on trying to open an audio file and I have to force quit due to program not responding.
David Nahmani
OK, it does sound like something might be wrong with your hard drive, or your song is corrupted.
benw
ok...I've got exactly the same problem as this guy.... tried resaving the song as a project incase it was a corrupt song... didn't work. i am opening the project files from an external HDD, and it is a Western Digital one, similiar to the OP. I'm going to try copying the entire project to my system drive and running it off there, anyone got any other suggestions?
benw
EDIT: copyed the songs to my system drive.... work perfectly.... so now i guess after recording a song i ought to immediately drag it to my system drive for mixing...despite the fact that i just bought a brand new hard drive just for Logic's projects... oakmoon
Well I can't say I know the answer but lately i have been only recording to my internal drive and so far no problems. I used to always have audio files listed outside of my project audio folder on my ext HD whereas now everything stays together. I believe the cause of "invalid regions" and "can't find audio" messages are due to Western Digital My book external hard drive. I did reformat My Book and I'll try saving a project again and see if this works. This was suggested by one of the only other lonely souls I could find on internet having this problem however he wasn't using a WD MY Book ext drive. I don't remember what it was. He did reformat his ext drive to a Mac and this solved his problem.
David Nahmani
What I don't understand is why you wouldn't save your song as a project. In my opinion, a song should always be saved as a project, and thus consolidated in one folder. This should take care of the problem once and for all. indofunk
Similar problem for me. Im accessing the song from an ext HD as well, not a WD but an ext HD nontheless. When ever i load the song, sometimes tracks are in the right place and other times tracks are in the wrong places....ahhh very frustrating. So normally i keep restarting my computer and loading the song until it finally has most of the tracks in the right place...if not then ill rerecord em....but...ahhh. what a bitch that is...i hope its operator error and not prog issue. Ive been recording with cubase for 10 years, no probs. never corrupt or confusing..im giving Logic all i got and its acting so fickle.....(scream!) benw
David: i do save my songs as project. im very careful about that kind of thing, all the audio files are always kept in one folder, the audio file folder of the relevant project. its nothing to do with how the song is saved, its a problem with the formatting of the hard drive apparently, although i have yet to discover any specifics or how to solve it. david, any ideas? apparently it can be solved by something in the disk utility.... cheers, ben

benw
buying a new hard drive... ive bought an expensive £70 hard drive specifically for my expensive music software, and im completely frigging broke... so i'd really rather problem solve this than buy a new hard drive. anyone got any idea's? cheers, ben

benw
yep, exactly ESL. try playing a song back to a client once you've finished mixing it. its going great. and then suddenly random piano starts playing instead of vocals, the bass is replaced by glockenspiel. FANTASTIC. the most irritating thang ever. any thoughts on the disk utility idea David?

The reason why Im using Mac is because I dont want to bother with stuff like that. I want to plug in and get going. It doesn't really matter what you want! That sounded just like "How come Logic 7 doesn't run on my PC? It's 2007 and I don't want to bother with stuff like that! I bought Logic 7 and a PC, and I can't install it. IT SUCKS!!"..... When you buy a new drive, open Disk Utility and format your drive before you use it. Mac and windows use different file systems. PS: just for kicks, open /Applications/Utility/Disk Utility and select your WD volume. Not the drive, the volume on it. See what it says under "Format" at the bottom of the window. If it doesn't say "Mac OS Extended", then that explains your problems.
benw
aaah brilliant, thanks david.... ms dos file system... could explain the problems! what do i do now to change the format? is there any way to change the format and still use the drive with a pc? can i change the drive without erasing all the stuff on it? Thank you so much david, you have saved my bacon again!
David Nahmani
No, you need to erase the drive to format it. I don't think PCs can read HFS+ drives... unless you have some 3rd party utility maybe. You could always have several volumes on the same drive...

oakmoon
I always save as a project. Reformatting my WD ext HD seems to have stopped the problem. Before my audio files never ended up in their respective song folders, now everything is nicely organized as it should be.
