stardustmedia
Hi my dear Logic friends I need to screen capture a video incl. the audio stream. What is the best free app for that? Cheers
Eric Cardenas
The free app that I know of is QuickTime X.
stardustmedia
You mean the app Quick Time that's included in the MacOS?

stardustmedia
Cool, thanks Eric. Had no idea that Quick Time could do that

stardustmedia
Just gave it a try and it works great. Sadly I cannot choose my USB interface out as the audio signal. Only the built in line or mic in can be chosen. Another app out there, free, but let's you also choose any of the available audio channels, out or in? stardustmedia
PS: I searched the app store a little and found Screen Capture Tool Lite (for free), that allows to record for 300s and any audio sound card. Will give that a try now and report back EDIT: Nope, neither this app does let you choose the audio sound card. I was only able to choose the built in line or mic inputs... Next app... stardustmedia
Nope, no sound card shown in the drop down, only the built in inputs
Eric Cardenas
Ah! You are still on Mavericks right? I believe they have enhanced it in later OS versions. Try creating an aggregate device to "fool" OS X and see if it works.

It seems like another free app also "suffers" from the same issue. Could be really an OS-thing... oh dear...

stardustmedia
Did you try the aggregate device? hahaha... I just found this article, about the aggregate device: http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/107516/mavericks-quicktime-player-not-recording-computer-audio I tried it and it didn't work. I think I made a mistake when choosing the combination. Have to play around with it... another time. Too much time wasted already for this. The screen capture is not important, nor urgent. Thanks anyway Eric, maybe I'll need your advice another time again for this
SRF_Audio
I was gonna say, I use my audio interface all the time with QT, but it may very well be a Mavericks thing. I will say, El Capitan hasn't been bad at all for day to day stuff. And with the Logic update, things are running fairly smoothly right now. stardustmedia
Since I'll do anyway a system backup before I upgrade to 10.2.1, I can also try to update to El Capitan first. Sounds like an idea to me, although I fear to loose some nerves on the way
Eric Cardenas
If I recall correctly Apple had some enhancements to Quicktime in OS X 10.10 Yosemite. I, similarly to SRF, have had pretty smooth experience in El Cap but this is mostly due to the audio interface that I use and the 3rd party plug-ins I've chosen to support. Which USB interface are you planning on using?

Eric Cardenas
Looks like a nice DAC. It's probably Class Compliant too right. Double check with Grace design if they are working correctly in 10.11 as many of the class compliant interfaces are having issues.

No drivers needed. Will recheck with Grace.
Darude
The free streaming app OBS allows recording as well as setting different scenes where you can have scaling, graphic layovers, video playback and picture-in-picture etc.

At the moment I have that Mavericks-issue that recording the outputs is not possible. There is a workaround, but I have to test it first. Then QT will be enough for what I need. Just a screen capture to show a bug, incl. the audio. Nothing fancy needed for that
