settings carrying over from mono to stereo instance of plug

For the longest time I've been able to change a software instrument or effect instance from mono to stereo (or vice versa), and the settings of that instance would carry over. Suddenly this is no longer true for me, as I've learned the hard way.

 

My question is, has anyone else noticed this, and if so has anyone discovered a solution?

UPDATE : upon further inspection, this seems to happen intermittently ... perhaps it's a bug?
