Automation cannot be edited and does not effect Fader

So today I put a track stack (summing stack) On a few Virtual Instruments and then wanted to automate them all in volume through the track statck.

That worked fine and interestingly enough I could have the automation work, but still control the overall volume with the fader independently .

The issue then came when I tried to go back and edit the volume automation I could only add another volume automation, but could not edit the old one which I could quite clearly see

 

In the picture the jagged automation is the old automation that works and is independent of the fader

The straight line is the new automation which is not independent of the fader

Open the Track stack and edit the automation on the original track itself.
