podrum
Hello guys , this may be dumb question , but will ask anyway . so in one old project which i can't access anymore ,and can't remember the order of effects , i set up things on one channel to be like this : lets say i want to distort extremely certain sound to certain point , lets say -10db so what i want is , if i have original sound peaking at -10 , when i start to distort it ,its squashing to that point , no further than -10 i just can't remember how to set up that again ? any suggestions ? thanks

Eric Cardenas
Insert a limiter and set the Output to -10db. Push the gain over +10 dB.
podrum
thanks , but when i start pushing distortion drive it still increases amount of gain , i would like to set the limiter to be always at same level no matter how much of distortion is sent so when i start to distort original sound i want it to stay on same level as original
podrum
or you can suggest some other way to achieve it ? with compressor ?
Eric Cardenas
It should work. How much over -10dBFS is it peaking? You can also just use a gain plug-in after the limiter. Set the Output of the limiter to 0dB. Set the Gain plug-in to -10dB.
podrum
thing is that i want gradually introduce distortion , so i want distorted levels to be the same as the original dry level. sort of level compensation when distortion kicks in and automatically gain is reduced to same level
podrum
this -10db was just example to explain, not the real level from project
David Nahmani
I would use volume automation and adjust by ear, as distorted signals often sound louder than undistorted ones when they're at the same mathematical level.

Depending on how you are distorting it will tend to add density but loose the transients.
shivermetimbers
Use a send set to unity and pre-fader and insert the distortion plug in on that Aux channel. Lower the Aux channel volume fader and set up the distortion plug in to the level of diction you want. Blend it back in using the Aux volume fader. Make sure you set the OUTPUT of the distortion plug in to a really low value and the Drive to a much higher value. Automation would be a big help with all the adjustments to acheive exactly what you are wanting.
podrum
ok , thank you all guys i think solution is to link two controls to one slider or knob , so when i start to push drive amount up gain goes down a bit . maybe thats easiest way
