Logic 10.2.2 and Automapping Arturia MINILAB

Hi There:

In reading about the automapping support for MINILAB with the 10.2.2 update, I decided to give it a try.

Now granted, I have never tried using Smart Controls all that much just yet. With my Nektar P4 keyboard, I haven't had to do much in the way of manual mapping of its parameters.

On the MINILAB keyboard, which was recognized, things got interesting when I turned any of the knobs on the controller. With the tick usually positioned at 12 o'clock, when I turn the knob either way, it barely moves and repositions itself right back at 12. For instance, I tested Retro Synth, for which the patch I've chosen has Cutoff and Resonance as its first two knobs already mapped out as Smart Controls. When I turned the respective knobs on the MINILAB, they ended up barely moving in the way that I described earlier.

What do I need to do to actually get the parameters to work properly; in this case, my expectations would be that turning the knob on the controller would allow me to go to far left or far right, which is currently not happening.

Thanks!

V.

I used to have a minilab and recall having that exact same problem. I found that the issue was in the minilabs settings, not in logic. Now im foggy on the exact settings but here's the general idea: go into the Arturia Midi setup app for the minilab controller and change the knob send parameter behavior from whatever it's on (I wanna say "relative"?) to "absolute" or exact. That will clear it right up. :)

Wow! I was so busy, that I've completely forgotten to try it!

After Hugo's posting, I pulled the MINILAB off the shelf at home and packed it in my bag to try at a cafe later. I have just tried joeflyer's suggestion, and it works! Joe was right, in that in the MIDI Control Center, you have to change the parameters of each knob from Relative to Absolute. Of course, you need to save the settings and be sure that they are your new Working Map (default).

I just tried it in Logic, and the knobs do work the way they are supposed to in the Smart Controls. Pretty damn nifty, to be sure, especially when it comes to automating.

Wow, that is very good news indeed.

Im am still on the fence. There are other options. I am looking for a controller that will give the least possible hassle regarding configuration.

Thanks for the reply.

Finding the right MIDI controller for you is a very personal thing. I promise that you will go through more than one, and maybe become so satisfied with one that you want to return it. Whatever one works for you, will be the right one of you.

Good luck, Hugo!

Thanks Velange.

Still debating which controller to buy. I saw that he Akai Mpk mini also "automaps". However it's superseded by the Akia Mpk Mini MK II and I don't know if it will be recognized the same way by Logic...

1st world problems, haha

I already have:

Push 2

Novation Launchkey

Arturia Keylab 25 (got it combined with Bitwig)

NI Maschine

Now, most of these controllers integrate well with one DAW and not with another...And that drives me (and many people with me) crazy...and it makes us spend money over and over again in our quest finding the "perfect" controller.

I have been looking at the Panorama P4/6 for controlling Logic (I know you own/ use one). But now I have learned (by browsing and researching this forum) that the AU plugin presets are not browsable by the Panorama until you save them as Logic presets...

So there goes one of the major selling points of Panorama...integration with 3rd party plugins...

But I am ranting....

In defense of the Nektar P4/P6, third-party integration is the mapping of the plugins out of the box, not the addition of the presets, which is different and only done with the Logic factory plugins. There is a long thread in the forums where you can download and install third-party presets. That's the extent of it, and I don't think even the other manufacturers do third-party presets on its controllers without some sort of user intervention.

But it sounds like the search continues; I'm sure you'll find something suitable in the end.
