ashleybates
Hello. I have come across a heading/option in the zone edit page of the EXS24 called Audio File Tail. I don't know how long it has been there but it sounds really useful. I have searched the manual, web and this forum for any information on what it is/does or how to use it but can't seem to find any reference to it anywhere. All efforts to try and make it do something have been unsuccessful. I have found new EXS instruments that paper to be using it, but can't hear what?!?! I am presuming it is some sort of additional release key option, which would be amazing, but just can't see how to use it. Is there anyone there who could shed any sort of light on to this option and its function. Many thanks in advance, Ash OS X Yosemite 10.10.5, Logic 10.2.2. Eric Cardenas
Hi ashley! It's a way to separate the triggered sample into 2 parts. You can then have one sample playing first and then the other. One advantage with this method is that you can have different samples for the attack portion of the triggered sound that the tail. You can then use different attacks for different velocities but the same tail for all velocities. This is very good use of processing memory. ashleybates
Hi Eric, Thanks for your response. That makes some sense, but I'm still not understanding how to use it. Could you direct me to any documentation on its use? The LPX help/manual doesn't expand on this at all as far as I can see. It does still sound to me like it would be a great way of assigning a release key to a specific sample. Do you know if that is a possible/intended use for this function or do release keys still have to be assigned in the Group edit page? Thanks again, Ashley
Eric Cardenas
I'm not aware of any documentation. You can try it out yourself. Release samples are like you already know assignable via groups.
ashleybates
Hi Eric, I'm surprise that a function has been implemented with no additional documentation to explain its function or how to use it. I've have had another go and have managed to hear it working which is an improvement. There does appear to be other processing going on that I can't see how to access. I tried loading my own voice in to the Audio File Tail of the factory Steinway Piano 2 and it sounds like there is some sort of time stretching, pitch shifting or heavy filtering going on but with no way of changing or editing it. Without any documentation this function appears to be a very strange beast indeed. Many thanks Ash

You're welcome! The strange processing you are experiencing is a bug. Try converting your voice sample to stereo.
Wee Gee
Just seen this ... a quick one: Once a 'tail' file has been selected ... how do you remove it??
Wee Gee
Also, does anybody have any info on progress with the above 'bug' referred to: I have a tried a stereo tail file with the same distortion problems occurring ...?
Eric Cardenas
Just seen this ... a quick one: Once a 'tail' file has been selected ... how do you remove it?? You can't. You can however set it to play from sample 0 to 0. Also, does anybody have any info on progress with the above 'bug' referred to: I have a tried a stereo tail file with the same distortion problems occurring ...? Works fine here. Did you turn off the Loop?
Wee Gee
Wow, that seems like a real omission ...more of quite a clunky 'workaround'. Logic seems very prone to these loose ends. The tail seems to be working now ... many thanks Eric.

Wee Gee
Sorry Eric, could I just clarify: does the audio file tail only work with 'one shot' samples?
Wee Gee
... also, I seem to have got lucky once: no matter what I do the audio tail is still now pitching down ... ... it is definitely stereo ???
Wee Gee
Strangely it pitches down by around 9 semitones ...?
Anax
Hi guys, is it possible to have the tail triggered by key release with the loop function activated? I can only get the tail to play when loop is off, but this is not how I want my instrument to sound.
