Jfever
I'm talking 200hz-1.5khz What do you put in that region for instruments that doesn't conflict with the bass and the kick? Do you steer clear to give the bass and kick room or do you fill in that space and let the bass and kick work from say 400hz down? Thanks.
Joe Lonsdale
Don't over think it. Most instruments will have some energy in those areas and if during your mix you find there is too much energy ther, cut it from the instruments that will suffer the least from having them cut. That goes for all frequencies. But don't try and guess what you need to do before you hear your whole mix together - sometimes you won't need to do ANY eq'ing. If you consistently find lots of instruments fighting for the same frequency space, then you need to concentrate on making more complimentary instrument and part choices during the writing and recording phase. I have to add that there are NO frequencies that you should actively keep clear as a matter of course - every song is different, each production should have its own flavour and treating your productions with set rules will result in restricted, boring and crappy tunes!
