M Robinson
I am a professional composer and long-time user of Finale for notation. I have recently purchased Logic Pro and love it. Because my music is published, notation is important to me. Ideally I would love to use Logic for all my notation rather than importing xml or midi files to Finale which don't tend to be very accurate. What I'm looking for are good resources on Logic's score manager. This includes books, websites, trainers, courses--anything that will help me learn to notate in Logic. Thanks! volovicg
Mac pro Video has a very good course by Peter Swartz on scoring with Logic. I highly recommend this. Also this site is a good resource - very knowledgeable people here. Lastly there are very accurate ways to exchange between the two - but we leave that for another discussion. The more you can do in Logic the better you will be. There are a few of us that do all of our scoring in Logic - takes a little time to learn and quite different than Finale - but I could never go back. AND.... the real time scoring capabilities is second to none in the industry (in my opinion).
angelonyc
The Logic Score editor is a bit tricky.. But there are ways to do pretty much what you want.. A fair amount of composers use Logic for session scores.. and might move into for Finale for more finessing for publishing the score.. One trick I use, for difficult midi tracks, is create a dummy instrument for score display only. Copy real midi data, to the display track and 'message' it to your liking.. Of course this track is for visuals only.. You'd have to go back to real MIDI track to make a change that can be heard.. I never quite got' the making of your own personal drum track staff.. So if the drum plugin I'm using (Superior, SSD, etc) and Kontakt patches will have alternate snares and kick.. I copy the real MIDI drum track, to the Score display track and move the A# kick to C1, so it will show up properly on score as a kick (normally C1).. Ashermusic
If you are a book guy rather than, or in addition to, a video guy, check out my book "Scoring With Logic Pro". It is for Logic Pro 9 but most of it still applies and then I have an inexpensive e-book called "Using Logic Pro X's Updated Score Editor." Both are available on Amazon. M Robinson
Thanks to all of you for your suggestions. I have gone through Peter Swartz's online course which was excellent. The one area lacking in his tutorials was specific note editing but otherwise it was great. I still have many questions but will try to post them as I stumble along... airforceguitar
I second all of the above contributors! Peter (Ski) Schwartz’s video is worth it’s weight in gold! I keep coming back to it when I forget “How to do THAT”. Groove3 actually has a new set of 3 video tutorials that seem pretty good (I just bought #3 so far) by Doug Zanger. I learned some things from #3 and am considering the 1st 2 to see what else he might have a different take on.
