How to send midi from Logic to a sound module

Recommended Posts

Hi

I have a JV 1080 that has Midi in, out and thru.

I want to make it play some midi that I have arranged in a Logic 9.1.8 session.

How do I do this? What gear/interfaces would I need?

Thanks

Let me start off by saying I've never done this myself. Not in Logic Pro 9 or LPX anyway. But first things first - You will need an Audio/Midi Interface that allows you to connect your Midi Device(s) to the Interface and from the Interface to your Computer via USB. In LP9 you will create an EXTERNAL Midi Track and make the Midi Channel in the Inspector Window the same as the Midi Channel on your Midi Device.

You will also need to create Audio Tracks and make the proper connections from that Device to the Interface in order to Monitor and Record the Tone Module back into LP9. You may also need to make some patching connections inside the Audio/Midi Setup found in your Utilities Folder on your Mac. If this is incorrect I'm sure someone will hopefully chime in.

Midi Example - I have a Yamaha DTX Drum Kit. My DTX500 Drum Module is Midi Out only and it does not have USB out either. In order to have it connected to my Computer I have a Midi Out Cable running to the Midi In Port on the back of my MOTU 828 Interface which is connected to my Computer with a USB Cable. Inside my Audio/Midi Settings I created the Device(s) I spoke of above. Think of it as a Virtual Patch.

Everything mdee said, except...

...and make the Midi Channel in the Inspector Window the same as the Midi Channel on your Midi Device.

That's not necessary unless you are trying to play/record multiple patches on different tracks at the same time.

You may also need to make some patching connections inside the Audio/Midi Setup found in your Utilities Folder on your Mac. If this is incorrect I'm sure someone will hopefully chime in.

That's not necessary unless you want to see the name of your synth in Logic's Library, rather than just a port number for your MIDI interface.

I would like to add that there is nothing the JV1080 can do that Logic can't do better! I know this isn't answering your question at all, and I apologise for that, but I had a JV-something sound module rigged up to Logic once, but decided that by Logic version 5, the JV was completely redundant and just another layer of complexity getting in the way of making music. I am sure you have your reasons for wanting to do this, but I just wanted to point out that the easiest way to resolve your issue is to stick the JV on eBay and use Logic's world class suite of instruments instead.
