mac book

I know that the MBP is the perfered method for recording portably, but, if i upgrade the ram in a regular macbook, is it possible to record live? No midi I am sure cause I would be most likely doing all that on my tower during post production.

yea theres no graphics card in the mac book, so it uses the RAM to do any video processing, so saying that you might to max out the RAM, and get a ext HD that spins at 7400RPM, mac books are 5400 and its not upgradeable through apple.... otherwise you should be fine for basic recording.

'saying that you might to max out the RAM'

The onboard graphics card can only 'steal' up to 64Mb from the main RAM, which sucks for serious graphics processing, but leaves all other functions pretty much a-ok... try subtracting 64Mb from 2Gb and you'll see what I mean...

The only true advantage of the MBP RAM-wise is that it can take upto 4Gb, which Apple inside sources claim IS more than 2, though they couldn't confirm by how much...

Meanwhile I still can't seem to track down a MIDI capable toaster...

Actually you can upgrade the HD by yourself. The compartment for it is next to the battery, as in you remove the battery and it right there. Look it up, I think it's on PBfixit.com. But its easy, I do know that.

I checked it out this morning, the tutorial for changing out a harddrive on a mac is on www.ifixit.com simple and quick. just get a new drive thats 7200rpm from newegg.com
