It doesn't change the sound, it's just a display thing. 

Click Drag vertically on the + 30 to -30 scale markings to the left or right of the graph.

 

Edit: later Logic versions have this scaling only available on the graph's right side.

It absolutely changes the sound, I use the linear slope on cymbals and other things.can someone elaborate on wether this "display thing" is an inaccurate representation of what the filter is doing to the audio?

Yes. But what you are seeing in this case is Logic's way of providing a convenient way to increase the users view for making smaller EQ adjustments. Pull it all the way down for the default view. 

 

Oh, and you can test with the pink noise generator. We hear no change here.
