Recording Volume Automation Problem

For many years I have recorded volume and region automation in the same way. Either the with master fader on my keyboard controller or by assigning a fader to cc7.

I have recently bought an M-audio Code 61 to replace my midi keyboard and I'm having difficulty getting it to work in the same way.

When trying to record volume (in Logic 10.2.2) I now seem to be controlling the volume of the software instrument ( or no volume at all), rather than the region or track volume.

The confusion comes because when I go back and try in Logic pro 9 it works in the usual way recording info that shows as region automation.

I may be missing something simple so any help would appreciated.

In project settings, under MIDI, check the box for "CC 7/10 controls Volume/Pan of channel strip objects"

(At least that's where that preference is found in LP 10.0.7 )
