hissing and ringing sound within logic.

hey i need some major help. i recently just brought a presounus V2 tube amp, with presounus eris E5 speakers. I've always had a behringer 302usb xenyx input mixer. before i purchased the two items i had no problems but ever since i seem to get a hissing sound in logic with a tiny ringing sound. i know the speakers will have nothing to do with it but when i turn them on i get the same hissing sound but then when i open logic i get a hissing and a ringing sound from them. the same i get from when im in logic trying to record. when i mute the channel it all stops. i've tried replacing the xlr cables did nothing. i've tried fixing the problem as if it was a ground loop but nothing. Please help, i'm going insane not being able to do my music.

many thanks marley.

Hi marleycs1997

I think you might need to give some more information before anyone can make any firm suggestions, such as how you have the kit all cabled together, are you still using the Behringer, how were you monitoring before you got these new speakers etc. The fault could be a number of different reasons.

As a first suggestion, go back to your original set-up and make sure it is as you expected. Then add in one piece of new equipment to see what difference it makes, take that back out and then put in the other new piece.

The hiss sounds like system noise of some kind and the ring could possibly be feedback (especially if it stops when you mute the channel) but more information from you is required.

yeah i see, yeah i'm still using the behringer mixer, i have to use a phantom power for it all to connect up, so i have the mic going to the phantom power and then the phantom power going to the amp then the mixer goes to the amp. i also have to use a adapter for the plug on the amp bcos it's from germany so i don't know if that will affect anything, the speakers are plugged into separate extension cables. the speakers are linked up to the mixer and then the mixer goes in to the jack port into my computer. prior to this i was using a big sony speaker linked up to surround sound and i never got any hissing sound but them speakers are not of the same quality as the ones i have now.

yeah i'll try doing the re link up sort of thing. thanks for that

Right, well a feedback loop for the ringing would be my best guess here, as you seem to have a lot of connections in and out of things.

I’m not quite sure what you mean by “the mic going to the phantom power and then the phantom power going to the amp then the mixer goes to the amp. A quick look online at this gear would suggest that the mixer should connect to your Mac via USB which takes care of recording/monitoring.

Off the top of my head your connections should be as follows:

Mic——(XLR) into Presonus (switch on phantom power on the Presonus)——(Jack) into Xenyx —--(USB) into Mac. Your speakers should then be connected to the Main Mix outs from the Xenyx. Having the extra Presonus preamp in the system mean you have to be very careful when setting gain as this can introduce noise/hiss.

You’ll need to read the manual for the mixer to ascertain how the buttons on it should be pressed so you can listen back to your Mac output for direct monitoring and recording.

Hope that helps.

i had to get a phantom power box to make the mic work as it needs phantom power, but i didn't realise the amp had phantom power. I've connected up how you've said don't know what you mean by jack into xenyx as the amp is only xlr so i've done xlr from the amp into the xenyx, but now i still get the hissing sound in logic but the mic doesn't work now.

i had to get a phantom power box to make the mic work as it needs phantom power,

According to the specs of the mixer on the music-group (owners of Behringer) website says "State-of-the-art, phantom powered XENYX Mic Preamp”  so I presume it is permanently available

don't know what you mean by jack into xenyx as the amp is only xlr so i've done xlr from the amp into the xenyx,

Looking at the images on-line, the Presonus pre-amp has XLR and jack output both at Line Level.  I presumed that if you plugged an XLR from the Presonus into the mixer, the mixer would automatically assume it was a mic and therefore apply +48v and expect a much lower level (mic) signal input than the line level you were feeding it, hence the suggestion of using the jack.

I don’t have any of this equipment myself, so I’m basing my suggestions on my experience and what the internet is telling me.  As I said before, try connecting in stages and check at each step for when the hiss/ring occurs. For example, do you hear the noises if you listen on headphones from the mixer? Do the speakers hiss if you don’t have the mic/preamp connected and are just playing audio from Logic via the USB. Unfortunately, this is all going to be trial and error until you find the solution.

the mixer is 12 volts of phantom power so it's not enough on it's own so thats why i had to buy a ultra- compact phantom power supply of amazon. in regards to the jack i went out today and brought a jack xlr and still no luck. i can't use the mic without the extra phantom power supply even when the phantom power button is turned on the amp. i've been doing trial an error today:

- went back to the original set up and still get a hiss and ring but a lot lighter

- headphones into the mixer, i receive a strong hissing sound no ringing

- yes the speakers still have a hiss sound outside of logic if the mic/preamp are not connected and when i open logic i get a ringing sound still.

- when i unplug the mix i still get a hissing/ringing sound

thanks for the help by the way.

That is strange as the Presonus preamp states +48v. What sort of mic are you using?

In regards to the jack i went out today and brought a jack xlr and still no luck.

XLR plugged out of the Presonus to Jack in the Behringer or the other way around?

- went back to the original set up and still get a hiss and ring but a lot lighter

This would suggest then that the problem was already there before you bought the new kit…

- yes the speakers still have a hiss sound outside of logic if the mic/preamp are not connected and when i open logic i get a ringing sound still.

What Mac are you using for this setup? If it is a model with a built-in mic this could point to where you are getting feedback from.  Can you post a picture of your sound settings from System Preferences and from Logic.

thanks for the help by the way.

No problem. It would be great to be able to get this sorted.

the mic is a SE X1

Well, that’s a fairly standard mic. I can’t see any reason why the Presonus can’t deliver the required phantom power for it to work directly.  Have you got any other capacitor mics that you can try with the Presonus to see if you get the same problem?

the other way round

Hmm, ok that means you are going from an unbalanced line level output into a mic level input (with low voltage phantom power) which in real terms isn’t the best thing to do.  If you go into the jack on the mixer (either XLR or jack out of the Presonus) this will bypass the mic preamp of the mixer, which you don’t need as the Presonus is doing that job.

could it not be the mixer that's causing the problem?

At this point it could be anything (annoyingly). I suppose as you have gone back to your original config and still heard the noise/ring, you should go all the way back to the start. Do you have any way of plugging the speakers from the Mac directly to bypass the mixer?

Screenshot of your Logic audio prefs would be handy to see before you change anything though.

unfortunately i don't have any other mics that i can use.

i've just ordered a new usb mixer that comes with phantom power option so i'll see how that works or if it makes any difference because when i unplug the xlr thats going into the mixer the hissing seems to stop.

Ok, hopefully it was a fault with the original mixer so you can get your money back from it. However, it might have been your gain structure being outta whack because you were putting the line level from the Presonus (hot signal) into a mic preamp on the mixer (expecting low level signal and so adds gain to it).

The screen grab of your Logic prefs - was this when you had your speakers/headphones connected to the mixer?

yeah that's correct

That might be one reason why things aren’t too happy here. If you want the sounds from Logic to go to your speakers/headphones when they’re connected to the mixer then the output pref needs to be the USB Audio Codec, the same as the input.

Basically, the mixer is acting as the audio interface. As I said before, you need to check the manual of the mixer as I’m going purely on pictures of it, but if you set the output in Logic to USB Audio Codec and the red button on the mixer to down (USB Play) you can route the Logic audio to either the main mix or headphones out (the black button next to the red one) and use the Line/USB knob to control the channel volume. Your overall headphones or main mix (speakers) level are then controlled by the knobs labelled Headphones and Main Mix.

Just a cautionary note:  If you have the gain up on those Xenyx mixers they're *very* noisy pre-amps.  If you ever tried a Focusrite Pre-Amp (Such as on the Scarlett interfaces) you would be really surprised with the difference, and headroom on a decent Pre-Amp for mic work.

In terms of the unwanted noise, if it's not coming from the Xenyx mixer, then try to ensure that your speakers, computer, mixer etc. are all coming from the same wall plug, if you use multiple electricity points you will increase the chance of ground loops also, which is an absolute nightmare for recording!

unfortuently changing mixers didn't fix the issue and still for some reason even though i have phantom power on the tube amp and now even on the mixer whenever i turn them on the mic never works i have to link up the Behringer PS400 Micropower Phantom Power Supply again for the mic to work

yeah i always change it when i need it to go through the speaker ect but i still receive the hissing sound.

would i link that up to the mixer and the tube amp? thinking of ordering one today.

i have it all connected to two extension leads off one main wall plug but this main 'wall' plug is in my studio which is separate from the house, then that wall plug runs up to a plug socket in the house, which now putting that into perspective kinda gives me a reason to think thats why this is occurring

Just to be double clear, at what point does the hissing go away?  You need to reach that point to even begin diagnosing this in my opinion. (Even if it involves unplugging everything and starting again).

For example, If you are getting hissing/ringing with just your Mac, speakers and mixer (Nothing else plugged in) then this is most likely a ground loop or electrical interference issue.

Do you have a powered USB Hub, or anything like that in your chain?  And have you tried using different USB Cables?

Reading your initial post, it seems as though the noise is coming from the usb audio input, for example USB/bus noise is like a chattering sound that gets worse when moving mouse, or the hard drive is running - is the noise anything like that?  Or a constant hissing and tone?  That would be ground loop, it may also be outside interference on your electrical supply, and for that you may need a power conditioner to help out - but they don't always work.

One other thing, are you on a MacBook?  Try running on battery power to see if that helps, or touching the metal parts of your mic, does that affect the unwanted noise?

the hissing goes away when everything is unplugged and im just running the mac, soon as i plug the usb in that's when the hissing starts.

nope no usb hub. the only usb cable you can use is the one that comes with the mixer which is brand new that i got today, there specific usb cables.

yeah i think it's an electrical fault so tomorrow i'm going to move my recording equipment into my room and try and record of my macbook.

no it's a imac that i record from.

in regards to a Focusrite Scarlett would that connect up to my mixer and my tube amp?

i've moved the tech into my room, the hissing sound has turned down dramatically and there is no ringing sound anymore but the hissing sound is still there. if i turn the gain up on anything is doesn't turn the hissing sound up where as before it did. i have to use the built in output because the new mixer does have a usual headphone jack, i've put a link in to the new mixer i have to see if you guys can see how i can then make my usb the output

It can do, but really it can replace the mixer (and sound better too). But don’t go spending more money until the fault has been found as you might just carry on replacing equipment that is working fine.

i've put a link in to the new mixer

That mixer is essentially the same as the the Xenyx 302 but with some different connections and a 1-knob compressor. It should hook up with a USB cable as before.

Just going to go out on a limb here…I’ve gone back over the whole thread and can’t see an answer to this….Can you confirm that you get playback sound coming from Logic that isn’t the mic input. For example, connect the mixer to the Mac via USB and the speakers to the mixer (forget the mic and preamp for the time being). Now, can you hear Logic playback if you drop an Apple loop into the timeline? How does it sound?
