very small project no arrangement just 15 tracks of audio and 5 3rd party instruments playing a 4 bar loop..

only happened after the update s I'm thinking something with the settings?

CPU usage has shot up after updating for me too. Unfortunately, I updated Sierra at the same time so not sure if that's causing the problem. I've had to up the i/o to 1024 to get through a very basic song without continually getting the CPU maxed message. I'm still getting it though, just not as regularly. I'll have to go back to 10.3.1 if I can't find a solution. Any suggestions would be appreciated. This shouldn't be happening with a two year old iMac.

Try low latency mode, If that sorts it out, then look for which plugins have been disabled as a pointer in revealing the problem.

I don't know how kronik got on with your suggestion but I had already tried it before posting, to no avail. Low latency mode helps but isn't a long-term solution.
