is your mac usb 3? that's the more-important part of the equation...

a 7200rpm hard drive would work well (and you'd have a lot more space, for a lot less money). but an SSD is faster; i don't see why it's 'a waste of money'...

EDIT: ah, triplets beat me to it (he must be posting from a faster mac...)

My mid 2012 MBP is the following:

1) 2.9 GHz dual-core Intel Core i7.

2) It has a 256 GB internal SAMSUNG SSD 830 drive.

3) It has (2) usb 3.0 ports.

My existing external hard drive is a 2TB WD My Passport Ultra usb 3 drive.

is that a 5400 rpm drive? you could move to a 7200 rpm hard drive, have lots of storage space... & usb 3 is pretty great...

PS

If I go with a 7200 rpm hard drive, it needs to be portable, as I travel between my home studio and my guitar players's studio.

As the 500 GB SSD, with a Sabrent 2.5-Inch SATA to USB 3.0 Tool-free External Hard Drive Enclosure [Optimized For SSD, Support UASP SATA III] will cost me around $135.00, I would like to keep the budget somewhere around that point :)
