In The Market for a Different DAW

The online reviews tout Presonus and ProTools as the "best" alternatives. I would like to hear from others who have had experience with other DAWs for feedback on what kind of experiences they have had with alternatives. I have about 10 years of experience using Logic, so it's not like I'm a beginner. Still, I'm finding that Logic's updated features are too hard to keep up with.

you can't use logic as you usually do, without diving into features you don't need? that seems (to me, anyway) infinitely simpler than learning a new DAW. but if that's the path you want... download demos. otherwise, everyone will have an opinion, but that won't tell you much about how you connect to another DAW. and, again, seems easier to NOT use new features in logic you don't need, rather than start from square 1.

just my opinion, of course 8-)

This question can it be answered without knowing your goals and preferences. All the daws have some pros and cons. Logic, cubase and dp are deep with a lot ofbcomplexity. If you want more simple check out studio one.

Which Logic Pro features are throwing you for a loop?

For what it's worth, I almost exclusively work on music by live musicians, and hardly ever use any of Logic's MIDI/virtual instruments/Live Loops/etc.

I've spent a lot of time with Pro Tools, REAPER, Sequoia, and Cubase, and none of them solve every problem perfectly -- Logic just gets enough things right to make me keep using it.

I'd suggest visiting Admiral Bumblebee's site. He extensively tests lots of DAWs (and other music software) and I find I generally agree with his assessments. (In fact, his Logic review is what nudged me to try Logic again after purchasing it years before.) He even has an extensive, exhaustive/exhausting DAW feature comparison chart: https://www.admiralbumblebee.com/DAW-Chart.html

I've decided to stay with Logic, as frustrating as it has been to deal with the last couple of weeks. Hopefully, Logic has finished its transition process.

Logic will forever be in constant transition. Music making evolves, and the tools evolve along with it. Or sometimes it's the other way around. It's up to you to determine if you want to follow along or not. I know some producers cranking out some incredible music today using an older Mac computer running Logic Pro 7.2. There's nothing wrong with that, if that is your decision and you feel you're more productive that way. Or you can use the latest version of Logic Pro X without ever opening the Live Loops grid, using Flex, or the Step Sequencer. Or you can use another software that you feel is more conducive to focusing on the art and being creative to you. Nothing wrong with that. Don't feel like you absolutely must know and master every single aspect of the software (I don't believe anyone does).

I use Cubase on the main now, i find it very good, mixer has in-line gain staging/eq cuts, Chord track is brilliant, Variaudio is streets ahead of Flex, Control Room is a real advantage, and i'm not tied to the archaic MIDI channel routings with Logic which along with the Delay Compensation bug does annoy me.

Main thing i miss from Logic is track stacks and the stock compressors. And i think Logic is a little better on CPU, but that's probably due to the stock plugins being very economical.

But agree with what FK said, just because there's new features shouldn't be affecting how you worked before the update. I certainly wouldn't look at another DAW unless you're having problems that seriously affect your final output.

Also as with all DAWs they've got their own plus and minuses, Cubase is a cumbersome mofo to use and so i find Logic interface to be much cleaner and easier. Studio One lacks a few basic features to be useful to me, otherwise it would be my other alternative as it's really slick.

As for Pro Tools, i'd rather use REAPER with a pro tools skin. :)

I over the years has been all over the place. Used every major DAWS. Started on Logic AV  Used Protools, Ableton Live,

Sonar from cakewalk days, Studio One 3 to 4, FL Studio, Reaper and Reason. I really made the rounds and ended back on Logic.

No one should be telling you what to use. Like me. I tried them. Get your own experience man. If you are on Logic and you need to

change. Maybe you are not making money. Then change.

I have started with Cubase Atari then Logic 4-9. Since then Studio One. Last year I spent crazy amount of time trying others as Studio One became shaky. Right when I settled on Live 10 , Logic 10.5 came out and I am back to Logic. My search is over. For now :D
