Danny Wyatt
Since I no longer use the name "3ple" I would like to change my MacOS account name, along with the Home folder, etc. I went to Apple's page and they explain how to do it. My question is, if anyone have ever done this before: will the path for files remain the same? For example, if I have a .exs file that's expecting to load a sample from 3ple/folder/sample.wav, will it now know that the new path is danny/folder/sample.wav? fuzzfilth
Don't attempt to actually rename an existing user account. This will end in tears and permission hell. Trust me, I've tried.
Danny Wyatt
Don't attempt to actually rename an existing user account. This will end in tears and permission hell. Trust me, I've tried. Haha I can only imagine... Even though Apple has a page dedicated to that, I was wondering if I would encounter any problems. Question: when you did it, did you follow their steps? Using a different admin account to change the old account name and home directory? Because what I read was that if you try to it from your main admin account, that’s when you can have a problem... Can you clarify?
fuzzfilth
Trying to be smart for a change and having researched this thoroughly before diving in, I followed Apple's guides on this to the T, yet the result was a proper train wreck. Nothing but unresolvable permissions errors all over the place, including the most mundane of files. Permissions that had been repaired and working were broken after the next reboot. After a day of earnest struggle (and you know that I'm not the one to give up quickly) I gave in and dropped that idea. Copy your data to an external drive set to Ignore User, set up a fresh admin account and copy data back once you're in there. EXS and its offspring are supposed to resolve file paths correctly after Spotlight is done indexing the new account's data. Some report this working 100%, I myself have had mixed results. Also depends on sample name ambiguity, if your drive is littered with KICK 01 samples, you will be asked a million times which one is the correct one. There's also EXS24 Relinker to help you. Not sure how that behaves with 10.5's Sampler, maybe Gabe can chime in.
Danny Wyatt
I used the EXS24 as an example, but of course, everything else on my computer is also in mind, stuff I have for Photoshop that follow a certain path, etc, etc... I can only imagine the headache... I went through that recently and I was in the middle of delivering a mix the next day. What a clever person I am, right? haha So I guess you answered my question. I think I will wait until I buy a new computer where I want to really start fresh with lots of things. The name doesn't really bother me, it's just my OCD kicking in and if that's such a hassle, then I will leave it as is... Thanks for enlightening me!! fisherking
i've been thru this (some years ago), and, as fuzzfilth says, it's not worth it. a 'proper train wreck' perfectly describes what i went thru too...

I guess Apple wanted to make it sound easy, but apparently it's maybe just for someone who have just installed the OS and decided to change the name. In that case, maybe it works flawlessly... I will stick to my old name, then lol

fuzzfilth
i'm already using that ID Oh. That explains a few things. Mine is Changed Later, as the computer mentioned that It Can't Be Changed Later and I thought "Just wait and we'll see."

fuzzfilth
Well, for one reason or the other, it seems I can't change my user name.
fisherking
Well, for one reason or the other, it seems I can't change my user name. huh, i change mine every day (identity theft is hard work). on a more serious note, apple really does not like us changing our IDs, the home folder name, etc. good to sort those things out at the start, or, as pointed out, all hell breaks loose. facej
Not sure how fully you want to change your Mac username, but an alias might work... https://osxdaily.com/2011/05/22/setup-user-name-alias-mac/ It's perfectly OK to add an alias like "Bob Dobbs", and you can use that name to login (assuming you have the username/password login as opposed to icons) but nope - changing the name of a user account really does mess up lots of things... Down at the command level it's OK, but all those nice programs you run won't appreciate the changes...
David Nahmani
Well, for one reason or the other, it seems I can't change my user name. That's because your username is good enough. No reason to change it.
fuzzfilth
It's not good enough, it's changed later.
