LPX cannot load Padshop 2

Hi folks and hopefully somebody here can help.

I have posted on Steinberg's forum as well, as this is one of their products - Padshop 2, a VST3 plugin. I am waiting for their support team to get back to me.

I am running Mac OS Mojave 10.14.6 on a Macbook Pro 2017. The issue is that while LPX (10.5.1) can "see" Padshop using the plugin manager, Padshop 2 is not available as drop down menu item in LPX. I have other Steinberg products installed (e.g Absolute 3 collection) and they all work just fine.

1. I installed Padshop 2 seemingly successfully using Steinberg's recommended Library Manager and Download Assistant.

2. It has all registered fine with E-Licenser (6.11.10.2266) and registered on my account with Steinberg.

3. LPX can "see" Padshop using the plugin manager (it shows as simply "Padshop" 2.0.10 which I think is the latest Padshop 2 version. The plugin manager has reset and scanned the plugin and appears to have successfully validated it.

4. I previously had Padshop Pro installed and it all worked fine with LPX and could be installed in a track with no issue. Since installing Padshop 2, it has all gone to pot.

5. To try and fix this I have performed no end of clean uninstall and reinstalls of Padshop 2; I have deleted the AU cache several thousand times; re-set LPX prefs; kept the Mac gatekeeper open & unlocked (to allow apps downloaded from identified developers); kept the e-licenser open. Short of blood sacrifice of my teenage children I am running out of road.

6. Might it be the location of where Steinberg's library manager and download assistant has placed the content that is the issue? I am not that au fait with the different libraries Apple has and fiddling about in different application support folders etc never seems advisable unless you have clear instructions.

I throw myself on the mercy of this group!

Thanks

Hod

Did you have a full license of Padshop pro before buying V2 or was it an upgrade from Padshop? People seem to have problems when it’s the later. Did you visit Steinberg forum, both the Cubase 10.5 and Padshop sub-fora? When I read the thread here that Des99 pointed out, I checked on my computer and the 2 VIs I have from Steinberg work as expected on LPX 10.5.1 and Mojave(didn’t have time to reply there yesterday, crazy day). On what macOS are you?

As an aside, I won’t touch these 2 VIs as I’ve nothing but trouble with Steinberg installers and updates. It would be too long to explain but let’s say I won’t buy anything from Steinberg before my memory forgets about those events. Too bad as they’re great synths but it’s like everything Steinberg does in my book, great concepts but half-baked when released. In french we would say, « Ils n’ont pas les moyens de leurs ambitions », don’t know how to translate that.

Dear blinkofani

Thank you. It's a long story but I (am 99.9% convinced I) had Padshop Pro, having upgraded from Padshop before that. That worked just fine with LPX. But when I bought the Padshop 2 upgrade, suddenly my problems started. I decided it must be human error - my e-licenser suddenly said I didn't have the licence for Padshop 2 upgrade or Padshop, so I started to doubt myself. (but how could it work in LPX if I didn't have the licence? I try to buy software properly and avoid dubious sites). I bit the bullet and paid full price for a new Padshop 2 and did a clean install. I am on Mac OS 10.14.6.

Yes I am trawling through the Steinberg forums.

I think the answer might lie in the AU validation. LPX plugin manager says that it has "successfully validated" Padshop 2 (it has a tick next to Padshop 2), but I had not spotted something that happens; When you press reset and rescan selection, a new window opens. It validated the Padshop AU but then at the very bottom it has a line I ignored saying "updating properties of Padshop by Steinberg", followed by 3 little dots.

Interesting to see you experience of Steinberg. The phrase you use I think means "They cannot afford their ambitions" i.e they are over-reaching themselves.

Kind regards

Hod

Update. OK, after yet another comprehensive removal of every bit of Padshop 2 and a full re-install, deleting AU cache, LPX prefs I have managed to get Unify (by Pluginguru) to not only see Padshop 2, but play its presets - hooray. I can also load Unify from within LPX so that is a kind of workaround.

LPX still refuses to show Padshop 2 as a drop down instrument however, so we'll just have to see what the Steinberg gurus think.

Thanks everyone for chipping in.

Kind regards

Hod.

Hi Hod,

I too have had this frustrating issue trying to upgrade from Absolute 3 to Absolute 4. Padshop and Groove Agent, despite successfully verifying in Logic X, don't appear as an instrument choice in the Steinberg Folder. Ridiculous as the others work perfectly (Halion, The Grand, Retrologue etc) The paying for this upgrade made all the more stupid as I'm now several £ poorer and definitely worse off in the software department!!

I have requested Steinberg sort this urgently but meanwhile I'm really interested in how you access Padshop using Unify, (I'm about to buy it) does this show up within Unify alongside the presets or do you have to do some weird configurations in order to access this really useful plugin?

Any advice here would be great. Thanks

Dave

Indeed, I have been in touch with Steinberg as well and they are working on it.

Patience, dear friends. Bugs happen.

Dave

Sorry, just saw your post there from -3 months ago. Good job we are all humungously patient people and not in a hurry or anything...

As to using Padshop in Unify (1.3.2), sorry about my sloth-like response and you may well have solved it already, but FWIW, this is how I get Padshop visible:

1. Create a new instance of Unify in standalone mode.

2. Click on the green circle to the right of the default sound "Sine Wave Synth." You should then see the drop down menu appear.

3. Scroll down the drop down menu to "Swap: All Instruments": You should see all your installed plugins.

4. For me, I have the option of scrolling down to "Steinberg" and "Steinberg Media technologies" to choose from. Both of them have an instance of "Padshop".

5. When I click Padshop, Padhsop 2 opens.

6. The trick then with Padshop is finding where the default installation path might be. I think the CIA or the NSA move it randomly around my hard drive or external SSDs to induce paranoia, fear and self-loathing.

7. I can then play Padshop from my Komplete Kontrol S49 keyboard.

The above steps can be replicated from within Logic Pro by opening Unify from within LPX and going to install Padshop per the above.

Hope you get on OK.

I am on Mac OS Mojave 10.14.6. The rest of my Steinberg plugins such as Halion etc all work just fine and are visible within LPX. It may well be a Steeiberg bug, but the entire experience and lack of speed in getting any kind of coherent response from steinberg has put me off. I am going to stick to Unify, Omnisphere and the recently discovered delights of Roland cCoud (while trying to keep CPU usage manageable). :D

Kind regards

Hod

Hi Hod,

Thanks for your reply and no worries about the delay. I did solve it using Unify. What a great programme and have since managed to access other great patches using Unify. I had long and painful dealings with Steinberg and after roughly 12 messages back and forth they admitted it was their problem. I also managed for them to refund me but the issues of back migrating from Absolute 4 back to 3 with no real advantages made me delay that too. I'm waiting for them to get their act together and sell products that actually work. meanwhile we survive! Cheers. Dave

Dave. Like a bus, 2 messages at once from me....

Glad to hear you got sorted.

I thought about taking up cudgels with Steinberg but decided to cut my losses and put it down to experience. I love Yamaha music hardware in general (I have a fab Motif XS rack) but have been underwhelmed by the whole Steinberg thing, though obviously folks still like Cubase for good reason. My takeaway is that I am not in a hurry to spend serious money on Steinberg any time soon. Besides, they have committed the cardinal sin of allowing their GUIs on their instruments to remain in 2 point font against black skins, just llke NI do with Kontakt instruments. I wish they and NI would hurry up annd roll out re-sizeable GUI's. Oh Oh, soap box urge coming on....

Unify is astonishingly nimble but powerful. If you haven't already done so, book yourself hours with John Skippy Lemkhul's Youtube videos and live updates; in terms of value for money his plugins and his freebie tips on using Unify are to my mind second to none. I am a lover of all things Omnisphere and his patches for that and tips etc are just great. A really good advert for a decent human being!

Regards

Hod
