System requirements and versions for logic pro

Hi All,

Hope someone can help.

I am looking to run a version of Logic on my older 2011 MacBook pro running High Sierra.

Simon Morrison's list above is most helpful, but my question is how do I get hold of older installers for the version I need (10.4.8)?

Thanks.

Hi David,

Thanks very much for the reply.

I'm a total noob with Logic Pro (well used to run it back in the days when it didn't belong to Apple, and even previously to that when it was Notator on the Atari. That's how long in the tooth I am 😉 ).

I think the problem I'm going to have is, I'm logged into my Apple account on this machine at the moment, but I have quite a few other machines on various different OS versions, and I'm not sure which machine is going to be the one I'll leave Logic running on just yet.

I haven't actually bought and paid for Logic either, so maybe it will detect my OS when I do and offer me the correct version, but at the minute, it only shows as the latest version (10.7.7).

Do Apple treat LP like they do the various OS's over the years, where you needed to have downloaded it from your account to EVER have access to that version ever again?? I'm gonna go with, yeah.🙂

Cheers, and thanks again for the reply.

You're not the only one here, for sure..! 😉

No, because there is only one Logic Pro 10 version, whereas each macOS was a separate "purchase". Once you have purchased Logic in your account, then when you try to download it on the machine/s you want it on, the AppStore will deliver the most recent version that is supported/will run on your machine.

I have experimented with all possible permutations of combinations of accounts and versions of macOS and Logic but from my understanding in theory on any single machine the App Store should let you download the latest version of Logic compatible with that specific version of macOS on that machine, independently of whatever version of macOS and Logic you may have on other machines.

At least that's the theory.

Hey Des99,

Thanks for that info there old boy!!!

And thanks to you too David for the confirmation.

Blimey if it works as slickly as it sounds like it should, I'll be the first to be amazed at the technology ACTUALLY making life easier for once!!?? 😉

Cheers, and thanks to you guys once again. I'll let you know how I get on.

Regards.

Hi Assessor,

Thanks for the reply.

Well, that would of course sound way more like Apple's style!!

I hope that''s not true, but I guess I'm about to find out the hard way. I don't have any latest model  machines, although if I really have to, I can Open Core Legacy them to run Ventura or Monterey, but I've been down that road before, and I can't face it again.

Thanks again.

The reason that the AppStore doesn't let a user *buy* software that isn't compatible with the machine they are buying it on, is to avoid people mistakenly buying things without checking compatibility, then finding it won't run, leaving negative reviews and demanding their money back - it's a bad experience for everyone.

So you need to make the purchase on a recent machine, then you can download it for any older machine you like.

Hey Des,

Thanks for that info. I guess the price we pay for the technology working well to make life easier, is it actually ends up treating us like children. Apple just plain giving it's customers easy access to legacy versions is what should happen, but it is effing Lord Apple after all.

And yep, sure enough, it won't let me buy it on this machine.

I'm away working at the moment. I think I may still have a drive I built up with Monterey on it at home, so I'll give it a go on that next week when I'm back and then try the "downgrade" on my older machines.

Heaven forbid they make it easy to buy stuff off of them. Sheesh.

Thanks again.

@Simon Morrison, nice list! Thanks!

I've got an addition and a correction for you:

  • macOS 10.8.5 Mountain Lion - Logic Pro X 10.0.7
  • macOS 10.9.5 Mavericks - Logic Pro X 10.2.2 [not 10.2.4]

(And if we want to split hairs, from 10.8 through 10.11.6, it was "OS X" rather than "macOS"; prior to that it was "Mac OS X".)

@David Nahmani I have verified Simon's list by installing old versions of macOS and seeing what versions of Logic came down. Also, by looking at the Info.plist file within the app bundle, I could verify the minimum supported macOS version.

So, from that, and this release date chart, I've got a supplementary list to offer: all the versions of LP, what their minimum supported version of macOS is, and what version of macOS is required to download the latest version of each line.

(Of course, compatibility of old LP versions running on subsequently released versions of macOS is unstated by Apple, but I did include what version of macOS was current when a "final" LP point release version came out.)

                                                              final pt rel date

LP(X) final point releases are still downloadable, if already in Mac App Store purchased items list, by using corresponding version of macOS. Older versions of macOS can be downloaded here. Virtual machine software such as Parallels Desktop may help.

Or, Intel-based Macs can download the oldest compatible version of macOS for that machine by holding down shift-command-option-R during startup (and newest with command-option-R).

Apple silicon based Macs can be reverted to an older version of macOS but it's a difficult process, it requires a second Mac and Apple Configurator 2 software.
