Wondering who has cleaned his iMac himself?(like fans and thermal paste)

For several years in a row, and especially in the summer, my iMac becomes red-hot.

I wonder who has taken apart his imac himself and cleaned the fans? And whether that is safe to do yourself or better by an expert? Disadvantage is you have to take your iMac away, which I would not rather like plus you can save money better for a new iMac.

Mmm, thermal pasta...

I've taken many Macs apart, including my MBP, to clean, replace parts etc. I would not attempt to do an iMac. Any attempt to get in there means you have to remove the screen, which is a *scary* procedure, and once the screen has been broken open, it's nearly impossible to get it back without any dirt or imperfections in there.

Check out the iFixit guide. If you're super confident with this stuff, then go for it, but it's not a task for the inexperienced. imo.

everything des99 said, above (but mostly.... 'mmm, thermal pasta').

i remember my friend opening his cheese-grater mac, and bragging about it. then he shorted out the logic board...

What happened after?

he had to take it to apple, who replaced the logic board... and it cost him (i don't remember how much, but it was significant).

i've opened a few macs in my day, and know others who have as well. but seems better (for most people) to play it safe.still, if you're gonna do it, google something like "discharge static when opening computer"... something like that, first.

me, i'm sticking to opening pasta jars... that's challenge enough.
