joachimbrackx
Hey everyone, I've been searching for the past half-hour, but I can't seem to find what I need. So I thought to ask it here. How do I work in mono in Logic Pro 10.6.1? When I create mono audio tracks, it forces me to choose output 1 or 2, which routes the signal to either the left or right output. And the Master seems to be stereo only, so when I bounce the project, it still makes a stereo file, even if I only have one mono track. How can I just work in mono, have the sound be equally distributed over my stereo outputs, and then bounce the finished project in mono? Thanks! Joachim PS: this is for a podcast, so I imagine all podcast producers out there have a similar issue?
triplets
You can click the format button on the Stereo Out to change it to mono.
des99
Lots of ways to do this, depending on your needs and gear. Assuming you still work in stereo for other things, what I'd probably do is create a new mono output in Logic, to use as my main output bus. That single output to my audio interface would then be panned centrally in the audio interface control panel to feed both speakers. Then I'd route all the tracks to that mono output. But there are other ways to rig this up, too.
joachimbrackx
You can click the format button on the Stereo Out to change it to mono. Yes, but if I do that, it doesn't change the fact that it plays only on the left or the right channel?

triplets
Or put a Gain plugin on the Stereo Out and click on Mono.
des99
Your audio interface will report to Logic how many outputs it has, so just choose an audio track, and set it's output to whatever output of your audio interface you want to use for this (eg Output -> Mono -> Output 3). Logic will create an output channel strip for it in the mixer if there isn't one already (make sure that output channel is set to Mono if it isn't already). des99
Or put a Gain plugin on the Stereo Out and click on Mono. Yes, but that will still bounce a two channel file, which is not what the OP wants.
triplets
I know, for the bounce he can click the format button. But you can’t use the menu command, gotta click on the Bounce button on the bottom of the stereo out. joachimbrackx
Interesting. That seems like a waste of bandwidth considering that nobody records people with stereo microphones. But I guess it's nice for the little intro tune. I'll think about it Simon!

But I guess it's nice for the little intro tune. I'll think about it Simon! Actually if you have a podcast with more than one person it certainly is nice to put them into different places stereo-wise. Also it's good to have a sense of room even with a single person. joachimbrackx
Wonderful, thanks gacki, since I'm working in stereo anyway now, I actually just did that! And since we're here anyway, any tips on levels anyone?
Simon Morrison
And since we're here anyway, any tips on levels anyone? For publishing a Podcast to iTunes / Apple Music: True-Peak level not exceeding -1 dB FS and integrated loudness of -16 LUFS.
joachimbrackx
Thanks Simon! I'll use the same guidelines when publishing to Anchor.
robinloops
Don’t hard pan two different people left and right. That sounds unnatural, like they aren’t in the same room talking. It’s worse when using headphones to listen (which a lot of people do for podcasts). Also stereo is good for when you have background music.
