Logic Pro freezing while recording

Hi guys!

I'm hoping you can help with my problem.

The issue is that when I'm working in a project and want to record audio, Logic suddenly freezes up and stays in the spinning ball limbo.

I then have to force-shut the project and open again. Then I can record but after an hour of production work and then hit the record button to record audio, it's the same problem all over. This both happens with small and larger projects, and I'm loosing my mind over it!

Any suggestions to what might be the problem and how I can solve it?

Here are my specs:

Catalina

Logic Pro 10.6

2.3GHz 8-core 9th-generation Intel Core i9 processor

Turbo Boost up to 4.8GHz

AMD Radeon Pro 5500M with 4GB of GDDR6 memory

16GB of 2666MHz DDR4 memory

1TB of SSD storage

Thanks for the help!

Welcome to the Forum.

First things first: if you intend to stay here, consider adding those specs to your signature, for future posts, because it helps a lot when people want to address the issue :)

My first suggestion would be to disable all third-party plugins, restart your computer and try to work for a little bit, see what happens. If the problem goes away, it's time for "faulty plugin hunt". I would then activate the first half of those plugins, restart the computer, do the same thing. Do this until you find the plugin that's causing the issue (if it's indeed a plugin).

Good luck! This kind of behavior can really make anyone go nuts...

This could be an issue with the drive you're recording the audio files to. Did you save the project before trying to record into it? Is the project saved organized as a folder, copying audio files into the folder? Is it saved on the internal or an external drive? If external, how is that drive formatted? How much space is left available on your drives?

Is this a Hackintosh or an Original Apple device?

Thanks for the replies!

Nope, not a Hackintosh - a big investment in an OG Apple Macbook Pro in 2020 ;)

David Nahmani: I'm recording directly to my SSD harddrive on my macbook. Actually, I think I saved it as a package. Does that make a big difference, and could this explain the behavior?

Danny Wyatt: Thanks for the advice. I think I'll do that over the next couple of days :) But is it crucial that I restart my computer every time or is it enough to close the project?

Again, thanks guys!

I strongly recommend you always save your projects organized as folders, not packages. Not sure that's the issue here though.

How much empty space is left on your SSD?

Okay cool. Just out of curiosity, why would you recommend folders instead of packages? :)

Too many reason to list (or even remember) them all within the time I have right now. I'm considering writing an article on project saving good practices. One of the reasons is to easily access the audio files in the Finder. Another is to be able to save multiple project inside the same folder, referring to the same audio files folder. Etc.
