cmf
Hi I simply carn't figure this out. This MUST be possible. I have a Guitar plugin, BIAS FX2, and want to setup an external controller, BOSS FC-300, to switch pedals on/off and use wah and volume, AND rec the audio. I'm not new to Logic, been using it for 20 years as a professional producer in Denmark, but no matter what I've tried, Logic wont let me. The plugin is on an Audio track. and the only way it seem to function, is to setup a knob switch in BIAS(automation), and then use the learn funktion(pref>Automation). That way I can setup the automation parameter on the track, and they talk. Only problem is, there can only be one. Everytime I make a new Learn(another pedal), it overwrite the one I just made, AND no matter what knob learned, I can only control one at a time...the automation parameter selected on the track. I just don't get it. Its 2021 and using an external midi controller on an audiotrack is not possible...!!?? Can anyone elaborate?
JakobP
Sounds like you're assigning Automation Quick Access instead of "regular" controller assignments ?
David Nahmani
Yes it sounds like Automation Quick Access, which is designed to assign a single controller knob controlling whatever automation parameter is currently visible on the track header in automation view. Use controller assignments (Logic Pro > Control Surfaces > Learn Assignment) or set up Smart Controls for that track: https://www.logicprohelp.com/assign-midi-controller-knobs-plugin-logic-pro/
cmf
Well, I've tried that, and problem is, it's an audio track, not an instrument track. Secondly, if I use the Learn assignment under Control Surfaces, it dosn't "grab" the audio track where the plugin resides, even though the plugin has a midi assignment, and automation assignment. It reads software instruments....
David Nahmani
Well, I've tried that, and problem is, it's an audio track, not an instrument track. Not sure what "that" refers to but in any case it shouldn't matter, everything suggested so far works equally for both types of track. Secondly, if I use the Learn assignment under Control Surfaces, it dosn't "grab" the audio track where the plugin resides The process should be that you click what you want on any channel strip you want in your Mixer, then choose Learn from the menu, then wiggle the desired knob on your control surface. Repeat as many times as desired. If you want the assignment to stick independently of which track is selected in your Tracks area then before you make the assignment make sure the track you're assigning is NOT selected. cmf
"That" means that I've tried exactly that. I've made many Learn assignments over the past 20 years that way, but as I wrote, though I move a button/function in the plugin, Logic dosn't read it. Thus, unable to assign a controller, unless there is another way to do that...
JakobP
Strange, if it's possible to automate it, it should also be possible to assign to a controller assignment ?
cmf
Yes. If I put it on an instrument track, it reads the incoming CC data, corresponding to the CC number I've assigned to a particular pedal/instance within the plugin. You can assign both midi CC and automation to a pedal, in BIAS FX2. I could do an instance of BIAS FX2 on the instrument track, and sidechain to a audio, but still, the pedals on the audio track dont correspond then. David Nahmani
"That" means that I've tried exactly that. Because I suggested multiple things to try, I wasn't sure which one "that" was referring to.
cmf
, yo, but do you have any idea of a workaround?
David Nahmani
Well... did you try my suggestions? Which ones?
cmf
Both. None of them talks to the plugin when learned. Turning the corresponding knob in the Smart Controls, effects the corresponding pedal in BIAS FX2 though. Assigning(learn) an external knob/latch-unLatch or fader to the Smart Control knob, trigger no reaction!! David Nahmani
Ok that's not normal behavior. Try to create a new user account on your Mac and try again with that new user.

cmf
And behold....that worked. Now I wonder.....I updated to Catalina...on top of Mojave. Should I dish Logic and reinstall...???
cmf
...Mind you...I still use Logic 10.4.8 (not the latest version).
JakobP
You could try trash the control surface preferences file first, quit logic and then delete ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.logic.pro.cs
David Nahmani
Reinstalling is overkill and may not fix anything for all we know so far, so no. First go back to your regular user account. Make sure you quit Logic. Trash com.apple.logic.pro.cs in your user preference folder, and restart Logic. Now try again.
cmf
Yes, thanx, super, now both knobs on external pedal board AND keyb reacts. But I carn't get continuous CC (vol pedal or faders) to respond. Weird. Turning knob on Smart controler interacts with vol pedal in plugin, AND visaversa, but after learning, nothing happens. Tried different faders and channels, and the midi activity monitor confirms action(before learning)....very strange
David Nahmani
Ok so it worked as expected in the new user account but not in your regular account?
cmf
I returned to my regular account, and hens the former message. Everything's fine, except for fader/pedal CC. Thats weird.
David Nahmani
I returned to my regular account, and hens the former message. Everything's fine, except for fader/pedal CC. Thats weird. I'm not sure what you mean by "except for fader/pedal CC" exactly. Once you've assigned a knob or fader from a control surface, Logic can no longer record or route the CC data that knob is sending to a plug-in, if that's what you mean. cmf
Assigning buttons,latch/unLatch, through Smart Controller, now works as expected, but though I can make a vol pedal(in the plugin) work with Smart Controller, "Learning" it with a fader or external pedal, don't work...though it should, just like buttons. In the controller setup, the fader/pedal are assigned(learned) alright, but leaving Learn mode, nothing happens....
David Nahmani
What do you mean by "Assigning buttons,latch/unLatch"?
cmf
External controller pedals, and/or buttons/switches on keyboard. A GTR pedal is either on or off, therefore it should always be latch. But in the meanwhile, Logic has gone back to the state before....it dont react to to the external controllers assigned again...wtf!? I try dish the pref again..... David Nahmani
What I'd suggest is to try to do only one thing for now. For example, a fader, or a knob. Not an on/off buttons, as those can be a bit trickier to learn depending on your controller. So first let's see if you can make a fader, or a rotary knob, work as expected. cmf
Faders and knobs dont respond, as I wrote in former message. And now, buttons dont either....as they did when I first dished the cs pref, my regular system. Veeery strange. The plugins pedals, both vol and on/off state, integrates perfect with Smart Controller knobs, and It can Learn a controller knob from keyb or pedal board(externals), but when I leave Learn mode, nothing happens. Neither by assigned knob on keyb or pedal board.... I dished the cs pref again. Same. Its out of work again.... hmm
David Nahmani
But faders and knobs did work in the new user account correct? When you trash the .cs preference file, did you make sure you first quit Logic, then trash the file, then re-open Logic?

cmf
I dont know if dishing the plist as well can have an influence...??
