Dynamic_Notes
Hi there, In Logic ProX if we go to open old projects right back to Logic 5 my understanding is LogicX will resave them before we can open them and this initially was the case for my L6 and L8 song files. Not long after I started using LogicProX (2019) I was able to open Logic6 projects directly and this is still happening. Really curious. Does anyone know why this is? Thanks. Or you were UNable to? My understanding is that you can only open Logic 7 and later projects on 8, 9 and X, and that older projects from 5 and 6 first need to be opened and resaved using Logic 7.2.1. before you can open them with 8, 9 or X. des99
It depends - the Logic file format is complex and has changed a lot over the years. *Some* LP5/6 projects can be opened, but others require conversion in LP7 first (and I've never found a reason why this is the case - some complexity with certain file formats or certain data contained within them I would guess). The bottom line is you can just leave Logic to do what it needs to do when opening old projects, it will either open them, or require you to convert an earlier format first. Dynamic_Notes
Thanks for your replies guys. @Eriksimon no thats not the case here. To clarify - I have L6 and L8 Song files. LogicProX has always been able to open these files, after it converts them itself first. From the manual my understanding is that's normal behaviour. I didn't know it may require another version to save it and I have never been required to save any of these song files in another version first. So what Im saying is - to start with LPX converted L6 and L8 song files and saved them before I could open and use them as I expected. Then some time after I started using LPX I noticed I was able to open L6 files directly without a conversion and saving process needed. All L8 songs have and still need to be converted and saved first.
des99
I understand what you are saying, and like I say, it likely depends on the data in the project. It's certainly nothing to worry about, and none of us here know the code that reads the projects, or why it has the behaviour it has depending on the project format and contents. Dynamic_Notes
Hi @des99, Not worried, just curious. What you're saying makes sense about depending on the data in projects. Only using a stock Logic (no 3rd party stuff) may have something to do with it. Still, it's interesting. Thanks.
David Nahmani
I've also noticed that older projects aren't all behaving the same way when opened in Logic Pro 10, so I concur with des99's experience. I don't believe it has anything to do with the use of 3rd party plug-in, as even stock-only Logic projects can behave differently in my experience. As des99 said, nothing to worry about, just follow the moves as prompted, you'll be fine.
