Mixing while you record?

For me it feels natural to start mixing the instant I start building a project. For example right after I've recorded an instrument or a vocal I will dial a quick EQ and compression "ballpark" setting to have them sound the way I want them in the final mix. Most often this will require further tweaking and finesse-ing in the final mix, sometimes not.

I try to avoid using latency inducing plug-ins such as mastering plug-in early in the process though to avoid any kind of latency issues during tracking.

I usually record with low latency on so I am used to working that way regarding the plugins. I always started adding delay and verb, compression as I go. Was just curious how others worked or if there was a typical way

i always mix while building a project; just seems logical (pun intended), since the balance of things, the tonality... matter at any given moment (ie how a new part fits into the overall project). then, when i get to the mixing stage, i have something 'great' to start with (and then i begin tearing it apart).

i sat in on a mix session for a hit group (the song became a hit, too). the producer told the engineer to turn everything up (before any additional eq'ing, effects, etc); he then tweaked a level or 2, and said 'print it'.

wish i could do that (but... no....)
