Editing Track Names inconsistent

I'm trying to edit a track name.

When I double click on a track name in the Arrange window, half of the time it correctly keeps the name and just lets me edit it.

The other half of the time the name gets completely reset to generic *Track Name and I have to type the whole thing in again.

I can't for the life of me figure out how to edit names consistently. It doesn't seem to matter where I click or the size of the track.

Even when I use the Rename Track from the menu, I get the same inconsistent result.

What the hell am I doing wrong? This is one of those things that has driven me crazy for years and years.

Maybe it is occurring on just multi instruments. I’ll check for that. It happened yesterday on a multi vi with multi outs. I did find that I could edit the names in the mixer and THEN create tracks from those and the names were fine. But when I first created the multi out tracks and tried to EDIT the name in the arrange window, they all reset to *Track Name except the first main channel. So it might be that the first channel lets me edit the name but ch 2 won’t and then I’m like wtf.

Yes it sounds like some sort of confusion between all the different types of names that can be displayed on a track header in Logic Pro. I highly recommend that you press Option-T and choose additional name column, and choose Channel Strip name to make sure that's the one you're seeing, as that is the name that will be passed on to the regions recorded on that track.

I think that’s exactly it. I was always confused by the two name thing…three if you count the track alternatives. So at some point I made one go away and I bet I chose the wrong one! I’ll try the ch strip name setting instead. Thx

It's even more names than that if you count the channel strip setting or patch name that the track inherits if it doesn't yet have a name and you load a patch! All these "Smart" naming features can quickly yield confusing behaviors unfortunately.

Once you mentioned the regions having the same name as the ch strip I figured that must be it. Because I’m always having to select all regions and use the command that renames them to the ch strip!

I can remember when I first started using Logic in the early 1800s. I hated that there could be multiple tracks for each ch strip. Now even though I use track alternatives a lot, I still use multiple tracks when I want to try things without messing with what’s already recorded. Thx David, stay well. The world of Logic users needs and appreciates all you’ve done!!

just a follow up, I'm still getting the same thing, having trouble just editing the track name in the arrange window.

I can't figure it out, I think it's a ghost in the machine. I checked my track header components and it's set for automatic without an additional name. Track name is all I want, along with the track alts which I use a lot.

Workaround is to edit the track names in the Inspector. This works consistently so I can just edit the name and not have to type the whole thing all over. Case solved, kinda. Moving on.
