mapping a Wii motes roll data to a low cut frequency [SOLVED]

Hi all,

I've managed to get a Wii mote connected to my MBP via bluetooth

I've opened Osculator, which is recognised as a midi input by Logic

I've unticked all the info it outputs so that it is only receiving "roll" information

This is being acknowledged by logic in the midi information display in the control bar, when I rotate it right it goes up to 127, when I rotate it left it goes down to 0

Which is great, I just can't seem to get this information to the low cut frequency parameter using the control surfaces pane, I've tried pressing learn, rolling the Wii mote and it just doesn't seem to learn jack s#!+... not really sure what I'm doing wrong, maybe I can attach a video or something to show you what I've tried to no avail.

Thanks in advance

Lewis

Hi lewisjamesmortimer,

I am not familiar with Wii mote, but I hope this can help.

Are you talking of the logic's Channel EQ low cut?

Have you tried to click on the low cut frequency value to select it, then click Command+L (for learn).

It will open the control surface panel, so you just have to tweak your controller (Wii mote?) to have it learn the function.

In my example, I assigned it to the knob for midi cc15 on my Komplete Kontrol M32, just by tweaking this knob right after the opening of the control panel window:

managed to figure it out, it couldn't have been any more user unfriendly to do, stayed up til 4am! *cry with laughter emoji*

the only thing I'm worried about now is that the Wii motes are on midi channels 1&2 now

I haven't plugged in my drummers electro kit yet and I'm very sure it's going to want to use channel 1, so I'm either going to have to remap the whole thing again, maybe another hour or so of busting my head against a brick wall, or figure out how to get the electro drums on channel 3

but phew! I did it! Trust me it was a proper ball ache

weirdly enough it didn't like there being two EQ's on one channel strip, once I had only one EQ on each channel strip that seemed to get things working, honestly it was such a palaver, if you're thinking of doing this yourself, a tip is to map the "roll" first, have only this ticked in osculator, set the controller assignments mode to "scaled" for a nice balanced sweep, don't forget to turn off the learn mode, untick roll, tick "button A" map this to the cut button, set the controller assignments mode to "direct", get that working, honestly please don't forget to turn the learn mode off after each new setting or otherwise you'll have to start again from scratch, I did this about a thousand times *cry with laughter emoji*, um yep, tick "roll" and "button A" if you want to try it out, pretty snazzy, oh if you have button A set to direct mode, the cut will come in when the A button is held down and will release when you let go of it, quite handy I thought, better than a toggle. Forgot to mention, in osculator you want both set to "midi CC" message... repeat the whole process for a second Wii mote, if you want to be able to filter sweep two things at once like me, bobs your bloody uncle, phew! HTH, can't wait to use it live in rehearsals x

Hi Davidstar,

how are you? I'm looking to get my singer to control the low cut frequency on the guitar and the high cut frequency on the drums during our live performance

For instance when a verse comes up she can press the two A buttons and sweep the frequencies for a thinner sound, bring her vocal to the fore, then drop it back in like a DJ when the next part of the song comes up, should be great fun I hope

here is an example of me sweeping our drums and guitar, I didn't sing my vocals over the top, but you get the idea, feel pretty jubilant right now

HHAHaha!!! That looks like so much fun. Amazing. It all makes sense now that hear the style of music too. Thanks for explaining the concept, it makes so much more sense once I actually understand the musical idea behind the need for a specific technique. :D
