How do I lock a VI to always hear it, while editing other tracks

Greetings, smart, kind folks!

My question: Is there a way I can "lock" a virtual instrument in my session so that I can always hear it, no matter what audio track I'm working on?

As an example, let's say I'm editing a bass guitar part where the artist asks that every time it goes to G, she want it to go to D instead. I would like to be able to hear what I'm playing on my MIDI keyboard to double check the notes I'm hearing. I'd rather not have to select the VI track to enable this preview, then having to select the audio track to edit, then re-selecting the VI to resume the process.

Another example: I'm playing an audio track that I'll be singing backing vocals on and I want to create a keyboard part that imitates what I'll be singing. The artist has given me an audio track to figure it out. I have to go back and forth and back and forth selecting audio track and VI to hear my keyboard and figure out the notes.

Is there an easier way?

Thanks so much!

If a single software instrument track remains record enabled, your controller will continue to be able to play it as you switch tracks. In the screenshot below, track #1 is the only software instrument, the transport is stopped and track #5 is in focus. You can see that there is signal on track #1 as I played it from my controller.

I’m not sure why you have to select your bass audio track to edit it. Very few edit functions require you to select a track, most editing is region based and independent of track selection…

Same for hearing an audio track to play along to - this does not require changing track selection at all…

Thank you so much, enossified, this is really helpful and clear. Turns out I had inadvertently selected this preference: Preferences > General > Editing > Select tracks on region/marquee selection So whenever I would begin edit an audio region, that region's track was selected and my software instrument was disabled for recording.

Thanks again for helping me tracking this down. All those unnecessary mouse clicks were adding up.

Good point! Turns out I was inadvertently selecting tracks because I had this preference enabled: Preferences > General > Editing > "Select tracks on region/marquee selection"

Thanks for helping me track it down.

Back to Flow Mode :)
