Logicman2
I read somewhere that Bass Amp Designer has a Direct Box. Can this Direct Box be used in an electric guitar channel? If so, Do I insert before or after Noise (Image below)? Is there any benefit to doing this? Thanks in advance. gate?
des99
It's just a plugin, you can use it on whatever audio tracks you want. It's position in this case probably doesn't matter. Note that this plugin does not do what a real DI box does (which is all to do with electrically matching analog signals) if that's what you were hoping (so it's not an alternative to a real DI box). It's basically just a very clean amplifier option rather than a typical bass amp.
Logicman2
Oh ok I see. Would there be any benefit to using this with distorted guitar plugins? Would it be like I am using 2 Amps in the chain?
des99
Yes, it would be like using two amplifiers in a chain.

It would allow you to add gain to your signal before entering the second amp, so that would let you overload the second amp's preamp stage more easily. Don't hesitate to try it and see what results you get. The results will differ depending on your guitar's output, your instrument preamp on your audio interface etc.

I will definitely try that. I also wanted to make sure it was something that can be done before actually trying it. Also, I am currently using a Steinberg UR44. I had to delete everything out of it except the drivers. I was getting a elicense error when trying to open Logic after newest update. The only way to operate the UR44 now is with the external knobs and buttons on the unit itself. But It seems to work great. But I'm not sure if I deleted anything from the UR44 that I might need. You have any experience with UR44?

If you do, start a new topic for that question and add the screenshot or let us know what the text of the alert is. You could also contact Steinberg tech support and ask them for help with that? Logicman2
The only thing I remember is something about elicense and about 20 errors popped up. The question I do have though. Is the preamp of the UR44 or any other interface hardware or software? Also the UR44 has Direct Box on channel 1 and 2. I want to make sure I didn't delete any of these or the way they operate. This was the reason asking about the Direct Box plugin in op.
enossified
It's a partial emulation of the Avalon U5 which is a DI/preamp. The unique feature is that there are selectable tone presets. Think of it as just another tone shaping device. The real U5 is used for all sorts of instruments, not just bass guitar. This is awesome Thanks enossified. This is good to know. I copied those presets to keep. So being this is a plugin I would still have to use a direct box into my interface right? And does it matter where in the chain this plugin goes?
des99
A DI box is for matching your electrical signal generated by your instrument into a signal optimised for your interface. This is physics/electricity stuff - plugins only operate *after* your interface has digitised the incoming signal, and so have nothing to do with the analog signals that come pre-digitisation. https://www.masterclass.com/articles/how-to-use-direct-input-boxes Edited April 29, 2022 by des99

No, it does not matter where you place the plugin in the chain. BTW, if you turn the button on the right OFF, the freq response will be flat. If your interface has an instrument preamp (most interfaces do) then you can connect your electric guitar or bass straight into it. You do not need a DI box.

Logicman2
One last question about this Direct Box plugin. Is there another way to access it, other than going through Bass Amp Designer?
