Ah figured it out I have to go to file not Track and highlight and control+Delete

Note that what you're describing is destructive editing.

For non-destructive editing:

  1. In the Tracks area, use the Marquee tool to select a section.
  2. Press Control-M to mute the selection.

Thanks David. I didn't know I could do it that way.

Just adding some nitpicking here: I wouldn’t call that destructive, at least not more destructive than what you propose, as you can easily get the deleted part back

Destructive editing doesn't mean that the operation cannot be undone, it means that the data inside the audio file is changed. Nondestructive editing means that only a region that refers to the audio file is edited, while the audio file itself is left unchanged.

That's what I meant to say - the data inside the audio file is NOT changed when you delete a part of a region in the Tracks area (via Marquee or any other way). So what keano12 proposed is definitely nondestructive.

I was answering the solution I quoted where he was suggesting going to the "File" editor (Audio File editor) and silencing (Control-delete) a part, which is destructive.
