Midi track affecting Audio track playback

Hi,

 I'm running Logic pro 10.2.7 on a 21 inch 2017 iMac 16gig Ram Big Sur DAW Apogee Duet with a Yamaha piaggero NP-12 keyboard which 

goes straight into the iMac via usb.

I have  a vocal track recorded and want to add some synths, however every time I play the keyboard on the setting Adrift in the void or most syntheziser 

settings the vocal track starts glitching, this does not happen on harpsichord, piano or bell.

Do these settings use a CPU hungry software instrument plug-in like Alchemy? Maybe increasing the I/O buffer size (in Logic Pro -> Preferences -> Audio -> Devices) helps?
