Rainbow Wheel on Undo

I keep getting a rainbow wheel that lasts anywhere between 5-30 seconds when I do certain undos. Occasionally it causes a permanent freeze and after several minutes I force quit. Mainly if I copy or move an audio or Midi region to a new spot and undo. It will undo automation steps, erasing midi notes, adjust midi note time, velocities, etc with no problem.

I think it might be related to Kontakt. And the larger the template the more prevalent the problem. I recently updated to Monterey 12.4 and wonder if this could have triggered the problem. I've tried everything to fix it. Including deleting preferences in Logic and Kontakt. Deleting the database in Kontakt. Older projects that I know opened up and worked fine, will now have this problem.

I am on an M1 MacStudio Ultra with 128GB ram. So I wonder if it might be only a problem with M1, Logic 10.7.4 and macOS 12.4.  Anyone else with an M1 running Logic 10.7.4 have this problem? I am running Logic in native (not Rosetta), and it happens in sessions with all native/universal plug ins. I have started up in rosetta mode and the same thing happens.

Thx

Also, I'd suggest to try freezing the Kontakt tracks (Pre-fader) so it includes freezing any plugins on the tracks as well. Start with what you believe to be your most resource intensive VST's and freeze more until the issue diminishes.

I don't have a similar system configuration however I have definitely experienced the issues you're describing with fairly large projects. Sometimes when you see these types of symptoms elevate after an OS upgrade I've found there are plugins that could be causing the issues but it won't be immediately apparent. Freezing tracks until the issue resolves or minimizes will help identify the issue.

Yes the bigger the session the slower it gets to drag copy regions and undo on my system.

I created a new session and imported tracks one by one to see what the causing track/plug in. All was OK after I imported everything but after a couple minutes I had the problem again.

It might also be related to too many short audio regions and memory leak but I am not sure.So I do not know what causes it.

Please let us know if you find a solution!

Can you find an action for which this reproducibly happens, so others on this forum can try?

Literally any time you chop or copy an audio region and move, and then undo. It seems to happen only in large templates when several Kontakt instances or loaded. And as Ozinga points out it gets worse and worse as you add tracks with Kontakt on them.

So to try and reproduce I would say build a large template at least 20 tracks running with Kontakt instruments loaded. Create an audio track. And then copy and paste it and undo.  See if it undos immediately, or if it drags, goes to rainbow wheel for a few seconds or more.

It may be an issue only with M1, Monterey 12.4 and Logic 10.7.4. (And Kontakt)

Did you notice this only after updating to macOS 12.4? I'm trying to determine if that is the cause.

I remember noticing that slowing down back in Logic 5, so it's definitely not tied to any recent version of Logic os macOS. I remember it happening whenever too many "elements" were inside a project. An example would be too many regions, for example several thousand regions, resulting from doing multi-miced drum editing with one region per drum hit (that was before Flex was there).

Another time I remember someone sending me a project that reacted very slowly to just about any edit I tried to perform, even though there weren't too many regions. A bit of sleuthing revealed that there were several hundred markers (all 1 tick long, all created at 1 1 1 1, probably a key command pressed by mistake by the person who'd created the project). After I deleted the markers, the project was snappy again.

Aside from the very useful info you're being provided, I would also suggest curtailing the number of Kontakt instances (or any resource heavy VST's) to an absolute minimal to minimize these types of performance issues from happening. It won't neccessarily always be the culprit, but it will enforce a better workflow ethic and better utilize your processing resources.

For instance, as an example. Instead of using 1 instance of Kontakt per instrument for 8 different instruments. Assign 8 instruments within 1 instance of Kontakt and assign each instrument to it's own output. Then create tracks off of those outputs to have segregated MIDI control for each instrument.

This is of course, if you're not already doing this.
