yeldarb
One of my M-Audio BX5a monitors started a 60 cycle hum. I know it's the monitor because I swapped inputs and power with the other monitor, and it hums even without input. So I guess it has to be something internal to the speaker? David Nahmani
When you swap the power (no input), have you tried connecting it to different electrical outlets in your house? Does it hum with all of them?
yeldarb
No but I swapped inputs and power with the other monitor and it still does it. Turns out it's a common thing with these monitors, the power caps fail. Amazon actually sells a set of four for $12 (each monitor takes two) and most of the comments are about this specific monitor 😕 https://amzn.to/3vZ0MmP

Wow, I didn't know that, thanks for letting us know what the issue was! So at least it's a fairly easy fix then?
yeldarb
There's actually a couple youtube videos about it. Looks simple enough if you can solder.
yeldarb
FYI the caps came in today, did both speakers, was a pretty easy fix but be careful as a couple traces separated from the circuit board. The part of the LED jack that attaches to the circuit board also came off on both monitors. Could have been avoided so be careful.
David Nahmani
Great, very good to hear! Thanks a lot for letting us know. So the monitors are good as new? No more hum? 😀
