need to force automation line up and down not side to side

When I'm in automation mode, I click two dots on the right on a line and two dots on the left on that same line and then I try to move the section of line up and down . 

the system grabs the line and Amy motion of my cursor moves the line left and right instead of up and. down...

is there a way to force automation to only move the line segment up and down???

From you're description, you're doing the right thing. Are you holding down any modifier by any chance? Is your mouse otherwise working as expected? 

Note that you can also Command-drag to Marquee-select then drag the line inside the Marquee selection up or down.

command marquee then drag the line works fine. It make the line so there's no room to move left & right.  A lot of my lines have the points put in manually.  That leaves them with an angled line at each end.   I thought I saw someone using a key to hold the left & right while dragging the line up and down.  I just can't remember what it was.

I think you mean holding down Option-shift while dragging the line left or right in order to adjust the angled lines on either end?

I tried shift-option and also shift-command.  If I grab the line first it only goes one way,

either left or

right OR up and down.   I'm trying to get it to automatically go up and down ONLY.
