Controlling External Instruments via Midi Keyboard

So.. I pulled out my old Oxygen 8 today.

As a relatively new user to Logic, I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong.

I've got the Oxygen 8 connected via USB and I can see the midi input. But what I'd like to do is control a lot of my external hardware via the Oxygen 8 (all external hardware is midi capable).

What I'm not seeing is a way to assign the Oxygen 8 as a controller in Logic.. I know I'm overlooking something, but just can't figure out what.

Help!

I must be doing something horribly wrong.

Yep, saw it in AMS. Yep, read the manual.

Only way I'm getting it to work is if dig into the environment and drag a cable from the sequencer input object (I can see controller and note information being displayed on the sequencer input object) to the various external midi devices.

Seems like I shouldn't have to do that..?

Also, the issue now is while I can control the external devices, it's controlling all the devices at all times.

Ideally it would just control either a midi track I have selected, or a specific external instrument as I choose.

I'm coming from Cubase, so of course I'm thinking about this in that manner.. where in a midi track you could assign the output port as well as the input port for controlling it. In Logic, it appears that you can only select the output port of the midi track via the inspector..?

Things are a bit different between version 7 and version 8 so you'll have to be more specific about what software you're using.

By default, Logic listens to all incoming MIDI and routes it to the selected track. You need to assign that track to a MIDI instrument or multi-instrument channel, but how you do that depends on what software you're using.

Well, here's one instance.. (with the old set up)

Software == Logic 8

Midi Controller == Oxygen 8 v2

Midi Interface == Motu Midi Express

Midi Instrument == Prophet 600

The Oxygen 8 is connected via USB.

I can write midi regions that get broadcast to the Prophet 600 in Logic.

I can not control the Prophet 600 via the Oxygen 8 unless I dig into the Environment and cable things up.

I can always see midi input from Oxygen 8 in the transport bar just fine. But there is never any out data ("No Out" I believe it says). This is when I have the midi track that corresponds to the Prophet 600 selected.

Everything shows up in AMS just fine. The Prophet 600 is set up in AMS as receiving only one channel (channel 1). The Oxygen 8 is set up by default in AMS with sending 16 channels.

Midi Instrument above could really be replaced with anything. Nord Lead, JP-8080, Virus, Microwave XT, Jupiter 6, etc.. etc..

This sounds like you have diverted the Input object in the Ports Environment layer away from the Sequencer object. Open the ports layer and make sure the Input objects "Sum" output is cabled somehow to the Sequencer object. For now at least, make sure none of the individual ports are cabled to anything else as this will remove their signal from the Sum output.
