Nunstummy
I've been doing a kind of inventory check of Logic 10.7.7 and come to realize there are a lot more drum kits than advertised. Drum Kit Designer (20) Drum Synth (72) Ultrabeat (100) Drum Machine Designer (170) The kits shown in the library browser are less than the presets of each of the drum instruments and I'm not sure if some of the library content is shared between drum instruments. However, just browsing through the list of kits in DMD, makes me second guess why I bother to create my own kits from my sample library, when I've barely tried the 170 kits already included? In fact, I'm sure I've created an 808 and 707 kit from free samples I downloaded, that might not be as good as the delivered DMD 808 and 707! Crazy! But... can the 100 Ultrabeat kits be used outside of Ultrabeat? I don't see them in the library browser at all? I realize Ultrabeat is older but I presume there are still Logic users that like those kits and kit pieces. Is there a way to export Ultrabeat kits to DMD? But, but... also, Is there a way to open more than the 20 acoustic kits in Drum Kit Designer, like the 170 "Electric Kits" for DMD? When Apple added the Producer + kits (30) it looked like Drum Kit Designer was offering more kits, but in fact, many were just augmenting the original 20. So, in my case, I tend to only ever use the Producer + kits and skip the original 20. I finding it tough to understand the future of Drum Kit Designer, now that DMD exists. But... I don't use the library browser much, as I prefer to select presets and saved kits from inside the instrument. I've been confused why the 170 DMD kits are under the heading "Electronic Kits" when these kits are not 'synth drums' but sampled drums. The heading makes me think those kits are synthesized electronic drums, when really they could be anything, depending on the samples used - many of them acoustic samples. Rant done.

They show up in the browser the same as any other plugins' content - load Ultrabeat, focus the library on Ultrabeat, and you'll see it's content show up in the browser. Just like you can't generally load a patch for Sculpture into RetroSynth, an Ultrabeat voice consists of a drum-specific synthesis engine, and/or a sample. That voice (or collection of voices in a kit), needs the Ultrabeat engine to play it. There's nothing to stop you adding Ultrabeat to DMD kit voices though if you want to use some specific sounds, that the newer drum synth components in DMD can't achieve for you. Similar as above - Drum Kit Designer is a multi-sampled, round-robin acoustic drum playback instrument (it's Sampler under the hood). You can add Samplers to DMD (I think by default it uses Quick Sampler for sample playback, and Quick Sampler doesn't have all the multisampling and round-robin stuff of the full sampler). On 2/9/2023 at 9:12 PM, Nunstummy said: I finding it tough to understand the future of Drum Kit Designer, now that DMD exists. They are quite different. One is an interface on deep sampled drum kits, the other is a way to quickly put together beat kits of simple samples. You wouldn't use DMD generally to create highly detailed acoustic drum kit parts with multiple round-robins etc, you'd do that in Sampler - DMD doesn't offer anything here. "Electronic" is a wide ranging term... I mean, there's kits in there sampled from drum machines, who's original design was all about sounding as "acoustic" as possible (eg, LinnDrum). Stuff has to be grouped somehow, you might have chosen a different scheme, but Apple did what they did and they usually make some kind of sense. If you want to organise the content differently for your own reasons, you are free to do that... Edited February 12 by des99

I count 110 Ultrabeat Kits by folder in /Library/Application Support/Logic/ Ultrabeat Samples/ Each folder has anywhere from 25 - 100 *.aif files that make up the kit. We're talking roughly 3600 kit piece samples. But, I don't see those kit names or sample files in the main Library... even when Ultrabeat is the track instrument. If I wanted to create a DMD kit using the samples of an Ultrabeat kit, I could drag the 25 - 100 kit pieces for a given Ultrabeat kit into a blank DMD. I realize, I'd be missing all the Ultrabeat synth config - I would just have the raw samples. Has Apple/Logic ever provided a more direct approach to converting an Ultrabeat kit to DMD? Samples in the kit "Analog Techno Kit".... 25 *.aif files One more thing... I found the location of the Ultrabeat kits and samples, but not sure where the DMD delivered kits and kit pieces are stored? {not the user defined kits - I know where those are}

But, I don't see those kit names or sample files in the main Library... even when Ultrabeat is the track instrument. Logic is consistent in this regard. The Library browser is to browse and select from sounds/presets/patches/plugin settings from both the factory content, and any of your user-generated content. If you don't have a plugin focused, then the Library browser shows you all content that applies to the current track type. If you *do* have a plugin focused, then it shows you all the presets/settings for that plugin. So, if you have, say "Sampler" focused, Logic shows you all the Sampler Instruments for it. With Alchemy focused, it will show you Alchemy patches. With Ultrabeat selected, it will show you Ultrabeat kits - these are all the formats that the plugin saves. You'll notice that if you focus on Sampler, what *doesn't* happen is the Library browser shows you, along with all the sampler instruments, *any audio file on your computer* just because you could load those into an instance of Sampler. This would be confusing, and wouldn't work anyway, as an audio file doesn't contain the state of the Sampler instance. Same with Alchemy, Ultrabeat and so on. In short, the Library browser isn't intended to replace a file browser when you want to import content into a plugin, it's to show you the saved settings of that plugin. It's for saving/loading finished sounds, not for helping you *create* new sounds or any assets a plugin can import. Now in Ultrabeat, when you go to import an Ultrabeat sound, that browser (when you click on Logic in Ultrabeat will show your Ultrabeat sounds, samples and so on, just like Alchemy, Sampler etc when you add audio files, as loading samples is a different thing to saving the plugin state as a finished preset. The library shows the usual list of sounds, but not the drum kits in Ultrabeat. For example "Asian Kit" can't be found anywhere in the Library. I'm trying to convert or open an Ultrabeat kit in DMD. The only method I've found that will work, is to play every note, piece, then bounce the audio, and drag the resulting audio file to create a new DMD kit and rely on the transient detection to separate all the pieces, then label each part and save the DMD as a new kit. No it's not, I can clearly see the little blue arrow is pointing to the Channel Strip, not Ultrabeat. As explained above, this is why you are currently seeing content applicable for the current track type. (Orchestral, Quick Sampler, Synthesizer - all instrument content). To see content for the *plugin*, you need to focus the Library on the *plugin*. If you do this, as previously mentioned, you'll see just the Ultrabeat kits. (If you're not sure how, you click just to the left of the Ultrabeat plugin insert so the blue arrow points to Ultrabeat - now the Library is focused on that particular plugin). I guess when you open a plugin, the blue arrow defaults to 'Settings'. This is one of those simple things I should have learned 20 years ago, but quite frankly, I don't use the Library browser very much, and select presets from the plugin drop down menu's itself. [that sounds like an excuse for being dumb!]
des99
No worries - it's not the most obvious mechanic in Logic (and so few people read the manuals these days anyway! 😉 ) This kind of thing is partly what this forum is for - to share things that are obvious for some, and not for others, so we all get to learn our tools better. I generally think the Library is rather under-developed altogether, but there we are...

des99
/Library/Application Support/Logic/ In there you'll see folders like, eg "Ultrabeat Samples", "Sampler Instruments", "Samples" and so on - it should be fairly straightforward to explore. Also you have Channel Strip Settings/Instrument/04 Drums & Percussion/03 Ultrabeat Drum Kits/ and Plugin Settings/Ultrabeat/ so on. But all the factory content, bar the loop content, is here. Unfortunately, the file names are not overly descriptive so dragging them into DMD still requires some work manually labelling and organizing the kit pieces. So, there are pros and cons to building a DMD kits from Ultrabeat. 1. If I convert an Ultrabeat kit by playing each note, bouncing to audio, then dragging the audio into DMD for transient detection, I get the FXs and synth tweaks added by Ultrabeat. 2. If I drag the source *.aif files into DMD, I get the raw samples - minus Ultrabeat FXs and tweaks. Either method requires some manual labelling and sorting of the kit pieces. Not too bad if you just have a few Ultrabeat kits you need/want in DMD. I've gone through a similar process for converting Battery kits to DMD. I'm really trying to standardize all my fav drum kits in DMD, regardless of whether the source samples came from Ultrabeat, Battery, Playbeat or XO or some other drum machine software. Skeptics ask me "why?" and that's a good question, without a reasonable answer.
des99
Probably a similar reason I save out a gajillion plugin presets to Logic presets. We just want it that way for our own reasons. 🙂

Neil Gilmartin
That might even be enough to keep you going…😁 Add to that, of course , all the Apple Loops you can slice up in Quick Sampler and then use as a drum kit, and there’s even more kits available! You have to wonder whether there’s any need for 3rd party at all with that much already there at your fingertips. And yet I still feel an uncomfortable urge to fall prey to the ‘it’s-included-so-it-can’t-be-as-good’ fallacy. If you can’t find something that works for you in those 600+ kits…. You’re just not paying attention. So really, there’s little need to buy any additional 3rd party drum software unless you’re after higher quality layered, multi-velocity samples - like EZ Drummer or Superior Drummer 3. JakobP
I have the "Studio Kit" set as default kit when inserting a DKD instance, I can't see it in your list... 🙂
Nunstummy
2 hours ago, Neil Gilmartin said: You have to wonder whether there’s any need for 3rd party at all For most people, NO. Most (maybe all) of the DMD and Ultrabeat kits use single samples for each kit piece. Velocity makes its louder or softer, but doesn’t change the sound. So, if you want a ride cymbal hit to change the closer you hit near the bell, you have to use a different sample. You might need 4 ride cymbal samples to capture the dynamics of a real ride cymbal. Most 3rd party drum software also use single samples. But some high-end packages use multi-sample, layered, velocity driven kits. They might have 30 samples for just 1 snare kit piece. Very realistic! Get Good Drums, EZ Drummer & Superior Drummer 3 offer this. Most of us don’t need this realism, unless your goal is to replace an acoustic kit drummer, which is absolutely going on in pop, hip hop, R&B and rock music these days. I made a video on this with help from the experts in this forum. Neil Gilmartin
Regarding realism in acoustic kits, I thought Drummer (DKD) does change the sample depending on the velocity? If I have a velocity of 127 on my snare track but then have a velocity of 64, I'm pretty sure it doesn't only change the volume but also changes the sample? Thanks for the link, Nunstummy. I'll check it out soon.

Neil Gilmartin
I know, yeah, but he also mentioned realism in acoustic kits in the following paragraph, so I saw it as a kind of continuation of the same point. My mistake! And good news about DKD changing the sample based on velocity 😀 Edited August 17 by Neil Gilmartin

Drum Kit Designer seems to be multi-sample. I always start with DKD if I’m after realistic acoustic drum sounds. The single sample hits in DMD and Ultrabeat seem to target hip hop and EDM genres. Frankly, I don’t own EZ Drummer or Superior Drummer. I had a limited time license when I did a YT review back in 2022. They are very good but a little expensive, and I’m cheap! I find the drum options in Logic provide everything I need. The only other 3rd party multi-sample, layered software I use is Abe Laboriel Jr. Kit from Spitfire Audio. It’s $29 and excellent, and different enough from Logic DKD to warrant the purchase. I think it’s easy to go overboard on drums, when most listeners aren’t discriminating enough to hear the difference between single sample and multi-sample drums. They’re more focused on the vocals or lead melodic parts - at least in the music I create. Lastly, I tried about 16 different 3rd party drum apps and they all had some kind of sequencer, but all were inferior to Logic’s step editor and pattern capabilities. So I always end up using Logic to program my drum parts. I own XO by XLN Audio, which has an amazing cluster browser for selecting samples and similar or alternate samples, but with only 8 sample slots per kit, it’s not that useful. I often use it to browse samples to find what I like, then recreate the kit in DMD with 16 - 20 kit pieces, the use Logic’s step sequencer. I collaborate with other musicians that use Logic, so I’m motivated to use delivered drums that exist in Logic to make collaboration easier. Any 3rd party VSTs have to be bounced to audio, because I never know if my collaborators have the same VSTs.

You can open the kits in Sampler, and see exactly how many kit pieces, velocity and round-robins each kit has. 2 minutes ago, Nunstummy said: The only other 3rd party multi-sample, layered software I use is Abe Laboriel Jr. Kit from Spitfire Audio. Nunstummy
I feel like I spent a year investigating so many options for drums, only to conclude Logic had everything I need. Silly, huh? Now I’m fixated on bass. I have 12 3rd party virtual bass instruments in my testing so far. And once again, I suspect I’ll end up where I started. One difference is that you’re buying into the vendor’s sampling prowess at sampling the way a bass player performs. That’s what you’re paying for. So a virtual bass instrument for $199 is going to sound better than the Logic options. But is it a $200 difference? When I’m done, I’ll probably release a video in early Sept. The issue I have with most YT reviews is they will not do a comparison of the top 5 or top 10, because they’ve been given a free copy from a vendor. The review might be unbiased, but without a head-to-head comparison, it’s tough to decide.
