new small monitors...

i have a simple monitoring setup at home; the eve-audio sc203s with the companion subwoofer. the sound is really good (the sub helps of course). they connect thru usb directly to my mac, have some great options (re placement, balance, eq, rolloff for the sub, etc).

still... had them for 7 years. feels like it's time for something new.

looking at: the focal shape 40s, the neumann kh80s, and the ikmultimedia iloud mtms.

i mix commercial projects at home (sometimes at the studio, thru adam monitors); just doing a lot more mixing at home. don't need volume as much as flat, clear...

any thoughts?

interesting to read reviews, and checking out some of the incredible comparison videos from dsaudio. (i know this is not the same as hearing things in person)

the focals are not as impressive as i want them to be (my previous at-home monitors were the focal cms 40s); the neumanns seem ok, not great. the mtms are impressive, especially in the low end, but in a 'consumer audio' way; not sure they'd make good 'pro' monitors.

a friend suggests the genelec 8020ds. any thoughts on that? (or any of this), anyone?...

I've worked with Genelecs for a while. Bigger older models (huge mains in a larger studio) and also the 1030a in my home studio. I've never been able to know them real well and to use them to make mixes that would translate. They seem to hype the higher frequency so much that my mixes would always sound dull on anything else I'd play them.

I ditched them for Focal Solo6 be, never looked back.

A friend uses the little Neumanns and he swears by them.

I would also consider whatever Dynaudio are in your price range. Great small monitors.

yeah, i've never been a fan of the 'genelec' sound. will explore the others more (focal; i loved my cms 40s), and the neumanns, and will check out the dynaudio monitors as well. thanks!
