rpacker
I am trying to refine the XML export from Final Cut to Logic (Logic to Final Cut is simple using bounces) for a smooth roundtrip integration between the two. The problem is, when export from Final Cut, the stereo files are split into two regions and placed on two tracks of the same audio instrument in Logic. Has anyone had any luck with XML and figured out the ideal workflow for roundtrip projects between Final Cut and and Logic? (I am using Final Cut Studio 2 and Logic 8) I am working in surround sound which further complicates matters. Thanks for any help from those who are working on a tight integration between music and video.
fader8
I am trying to refine the XML export from Final Cut to Logic (Logic to Final Cut is simple using bounces) for a smooth roundtrip integration between the two. The problem is, when export from Final Cut, the stereo files are split into two regions and placed on two tracks of the same audio instrument in Logic. Has anyone had any luck with XML and figured out the ideal workflow for roundtrip projects between Final Cut and and Logic? (I am using Final Cut Studio 2 and Logic 8) An ideal workflow? No. A workable one, yes. Since FCP handles stereo files across 2 tracks, the XML references the file twice. Just delete the duplicate Logic track. It doesn't actually change it to a split stereo file. Don't expect to receive any audio keyframing intact. After I import the XML into Logic, I just delete all track automation and start from scratch. The FCP keyframing has poor resolution anyway. If I do any audio keyframing in FCP, it's only cursory. After that, go through all the track audio channels and be sure they are set appropriately to mono or stereo based on the file type on the track. The XML doesn't grok mono vs. stereo files. Once those things are done, you're pretty much ready to start work. As far as reference video, I usually render my sequence as DV, Video Only. Saves a bit of bandwidth as Logic doesn't have to deal with the audio track of the ref video. If you're concerned about sync, before exporting your sequence paste a 2-pop leader at the head and tail of your sequence with the audio on its own track. Once everything is loaded up in Logic and you can play the whole sequence back. If both 2-pops line up, you know you're golden. There's a folder full of leaders on one of your FCS DVDs. I like to keep things in manageable chunks, ie I wont work on a sequence longer than 15 minutes duration, and more typically it's 10 or 12 minutes. So I'll bounce each segment out, then import to a FCP Bin and back into the original sequence. Here's where your 2-pops come in handy again. Mute your old tracks. Your new audio will now play in your nested sequence. I am working in surround sound which further complicates matters. Yes, it does. Not impossible, just a pain in the butt! Good luck!
