Random MIDI inputs/outs keep changing at will

Recommended Posts

I recently (finally) updated to Big Sur and Logic 10.7.2.  Yesterday was fine, today the number of MIDI ins/outs keeps changing at will, I'm not touching anything.  Only 2 MIDI keyboard controllers and a MOTU M2 that does have, but I'm not using, MIDI ports.

The video below was not edited, this is just how erratic the behavior is.

Any idea what's going on?

The first question is when all your devices are connected how many inputs and outputs should be detected?

The first message says 0 inputs and 1 output, the second says 2 inputs and 3 outputs. That means to me that whatever device(s) provide those 2 extra inputs and outputs are losing connections with Logic. It could be a bad USB or MIDI cable, it could be a hub problem. I'll assume you power up all the devices before launching Logic.

I own the M2 and know it has 1 input and 1 output, I'm surprised that with two controllers you have have only one additional input but two additional outputs. Based on those messages, it would appear that the connection to the M2 is intermittent and at least one of your controllers.

Check Utilities/Audio MIDI setup to make sure all devices are there.

In Logic, go to Control Surfaces/Setup and see that all controllers are there:

In Settings/MIDI/Input see if all your devices are there. It should match what you see in Audio MIDI Setup:

That should identify what devices are the problem, then you can go from there. Hope this helps.

This is a problem that has happened to me before. My advice would be to check the MIDI Audio/Gadget Setup to make sure all devices are there.
