recording into step sequencer

I like the drum step sequencer - its very good BUT its seems I cant record directly into it in the same way I can into a midi instrument track. Whys is this so? Is there a work around? Will it change in the future? Its a hell of a limitation I feel. i want to be able to use the features that exist in the step sequencer once I have played in my part.

Oh right - thank you scg. There is a little record button inside the step sequencer! But and maybe this is a bug - I cant create a pattern region in a drummer track in the loop window - only in the tracks window! According to the documentation I should be able to  - so I can use it with DMD. Just out of interest what controller do you use for recording drums ( assuming you do). Thankyou for your help.

By loop window I assume you mean Live Loops? If so, I'm not sure about that, as I don't use Live Loops much. As for a controller, I usually just use my MIDI keyboard or program directly in the piano roll or step sequencer or whatever, but one thing I've used a bit that you might find interesting (if you're not already aware of it) is TouchOSC.
