If "disk" storage actually becomes "tight" – an extremely unlikely situation these days – these items will automatically be deleted. You actually don't need to "do it yourself," although you can. This is another example of computer systems being "lazy." In today's world of generally-abundant resources ... which definitely is a very-recent development ... this strategy now makes a certain amount of sense.
