Question regarding time stretching.

Is there a difference between the different time stretching options in Logic? Like if there is one that *is better* between Opt + Drag the region border, adjusting the region length with flex time on and going to time and pitch machine? Or are all of those just the same in different places?

Hi gunbrenner,

The algorithms available in the Time & Pitch Machine and the ones under Edit > Time Stretch (used when option dragging when Flex Time is disabled) are the same:

The Flex Time ones are different, more recent and better in my experience.

You should anyway give them all try and hear for yourself 🙂

On top of what Jordi said (Option-drag uses the older, lesser quality algorithms of the Time and Pitch machine, dragging the top right corner of a region in Flex editing uses the newer, higher quality Flex algorithms), using the Time and Pitch algos is destructive (it creates a new audio file) while using Flex is nondestructive (it's applied in RAM when playing back the flexed audio region but the audio file on your drive is left untouched).

How is adjusting the region length with flex time on actually done? Is dragging the top right corner of a region in Flex editing done in the main window?

Oh, just realised this is in the Track Editor.

You can:

  • With Flex View off, Option-drag the lower right edge of the region
  • With Flex View off, drag the upper right edge of the region with the Flex Tool
  • With Flex View on, drag the upper right edge of the region.

In all three scenarios, Flex must be enabled (Flex & Follow in the region parameters is On) and you have a Flex Time mode chosen in the track's Flex Mode parameter.

This applies in the Tracks area and the Audio Track Editor.
