Coker
I started using an external hard drive - (a Western Digital Passport 160 gig), and when I try to record on this drive, it gives me the rainbow beach ball for nearly 2 complete minutes before actually letting recording being. Was I supposed to format the drive for Logic ahead of time? Recording works normally when I'm using my MacBook's internal hard drive. - Thanks for any help
thindave
Well, you should run Disk Utility and ensure that the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (non-journaled). The drive could formatted as FAT right now...

Interesting that it would play a project I imported over from ProTools, but that it was the recording aspect that went awry. Reformatted as Mac OS Extended seemed to fix everything. I've since read that there is some different opinions on whether to use Journaled or Non-Journaled, but it's working now as Non-Journaled, so..... Out of curiosity, how's that little drive doing for you? That's a 2.5" 5400rpm bus-powered USB2.0 drive. Not typically used for recording audio, on all counts. How's your performance with it? If it works well enough, such a little drive could be an attractive option for the on-the-go types.
dkgross
it's probably just fine for small things..but I sure wouldn't do any serious mission-critical recording on that slow of a drive.. Plenty of small 7200rpm drives around for not-much-money. my fav drives are these..but, I wouldn't call them 'portable'.. http://www.pacificproaudio.com/drives.asp
