chopping samples in logic

Is there a way to quickly chop samples in logic (eg:recycle , roland mv 8000 auto chop,or my favorite the MPC 4000!!). i use alot of drum and record samples and Im trying to find the quickest way possible.. I'm currently playing with NI's intakt which is pretty cool but would like to find an even more efficient way to do this.. Any help would be greatly appreciated..

I take it when you mention chopping you're talking about taking chosen slices of audio out of loops, mainly drum loops?

If so add the file in question to the audio window, Highlight the specific parts one by one (kick, snare, etc) and choose save selection from the file drop down menu. Name it and save it to your relevant folder.Hope this helps...

one way i do it that works pretty well is, say i have a two bar loop, if you already know the tempo you can just set it but if you dont than the easy fix is just to set the locators to 2 bars (in this example) and highlight your loop and click local menu Region>Set locators by region. bam. now you have the same tempo as the loop. then what i do is put the loop on the begining of a bar so i can see where it lines up, then select the scissors tool and option click usually a 8th note (or quarter or 16th) from the beginning of the loop. bam. instant chops, feel free to reorganize away.

What I did in L8 was...

1. Record audio into Logic.

2. Move the playhead over the beginning of the part you want to chop.

3. At the top, right above the Arrange Window select "Split by Playhead".

4. Do this again at the end of the part you want to chop.

5. Select the chopped region and go to File > Export > Region as Audio file...

6. Choose file type and where you want to save

7. Load that file into EXS24, Battery, etc.

There might be a quicker way but this didn't take long for me.

i think ive found an easier way to do so. I use a program called kontakt 2 by native instruments. It has a feature called beat machine which enables me to put markers on the sample. You can then slice the sample where the markers are and map it out over the keyboard.. Great program which works fast than the mpc4000.

if the drummer or their parts are in tempo u can hit option plus scissors click and it will chop up 16th notes, 8th notes etc or a region but based on the tempo grid not on the transients.

u can also use strip silence.

what u probably want and many logic users want is beat detective type of tool.

Funny thing is that I am just now starting to play around with chopping beats up, etc.

Hopefully I will be able to figure out an efficient way to do this inside of Logic.

If not, then there is always ReCycle.

____________

FWIW - what I am talking about is ripping audio from a CD or Vinyl (whatever), choosing the section of that audio file that I want to chop (be it second, bars, chorus, verse, etc.), and then "chop" that section so that I can apply each individual hit to a note on the keyboard - or (in my case) my Trigger Finger.

hhmmm .... we'll see what happens.

Recycle + Logic FTW.

I love how Logic handles rex files. Recycle is arguably overpriced and hasn't changed in 5 years but its a classic. If you're doing a lot of sampling and chopping don't think twice about spending the money - it will make your life great. You can just drag from Finder into Arrange and Logic sets up little crossfades b/t the slices. Or load up a multi out EXS with your rex and go to town.

Basically most of the interesting ways to work your way through chopping audio are said. How I do it: load the beat into an audio-track, match tempo (by using the locators and the tip described above) and either chop equally by option click, or manually chop slices (there is also a kind of beat detective by using a trick described in this forum by moving from transient to transient).

Finally everything chopped, new instrument track with exs24, open edit window, select all audio regions from the chopped audio track and drop them into the edit window. It will ask you to lay the samples in a row down your keys.

Be aware: you can NOT load this .exs into ultrabeat, as it does not support playing a sample from different offsets to an end (well, actually it does with quirky workarounds, but do not try that at home – or at the studio), which is basically what happens in EXS24 when you drop the different regions of one Audio-file onto it.

Now the tricky part to get a rex-like MIDI-file to play your newly created exs: if you have not created equal slices (like 16th or sth) but sliced by transient which are flying around off the beat, you mark the audio track and in the event list, you basically see where your MIDI notes need to start and how long they need to be to play the basic rhythm. I have not found a way to transform those events into MIDI notes though. So if you want a MIDI-track to play your instrument in the original tempo and groove you need to do it manually, but at least you know with the help of the event list where the notes need to go. Anybody knows a way to transform those Audio-Region events into MIDI-notes?

Also, another way, but a bit tricky as well, is described here:

(sorry, text german only, but images are english :) )

You could also use part of the linked trick to create the MIDI notes if you have cut by transient…

Hi,

Thanks for the link!

Yes i'm a german guy...

Is it hard getting the information out of my posting? Should it be translated?

Thanks in advance

EDIT:

I have my computer running in english language. I don't like the german keyboard layout ;)

If it is possible for you to do it in English, that would be very much aprreicated!

:D

I am still trying to figure out a way to make my Trigger Finger & logic behave like (I think) MPC's behave. This may prove to be a useful tool for me, although I think I am doing it the right way. There is always more than one way to do something in Logic.

Thanks & take care.

Really good job on that tutorial, sir.

Thanks a lot for sharing with us.

Do you happen to have the original drum audio clip - so I could have something to practice with?

May seem silly ... but your audio sample was really good (IMHO).

Thanks again.

It's so easy in Quattro that a trained ape could do it !
