The Match Box Challenge!

s0niccurve

Recommended Posts

hello everyone,

i have a challenge for anyone who wishes to participate.

the challenge is to use a regular box of matches to produce a song/sound scape/other interesting noise.

for example you can:

-record different hits on the box

-record match sounds e.g. snapping/striking

-sample the recorded audio into a tuned instrument.

The Rules:

-must be done entirely in logic

-must use only a box of matches (no separate sticks, beaters, picks ect.)

Here is a rough idea to get you started....

recorded a matchbox for a minute then chose 5 samples from that recording each a second or so long. Used those in EXS to create pitched and percussive instruments and used only Logic plugs for the rest. No third party stuff at all.

hope you like

Thanks for starting this s0niccurve

realy enjoyed doing it.

that was great....no really....great

is the matchbox the only virtual/real instrument we´ll ever need...

gonna be moving house this week....but when i´m a bit settled i´d love to have a go..........

i´m a newbie to the exs (i´ve only started to learn how to use it this week, for editin my own samples)

what great fun...can´t wait

cheers El-Bo

nice to have your efforts apreciated

There was a really good piece in Sound on Sound recently about using the EXS for this kind of thing.

To summarise what it said - chose a sample, zero in on a small fraction of that sample and loop it. spread that out over a keyboard and you should have a pitched instrument. The sample acts as a wave - similar to how synthesis works you know sine wave/triangle etc but the sample wave is more irregular - filter, pitch and tune to taste and away you go.

Hi guys - I'm no EXS Guru

The instruments themselves aren't very interesting. It was by thinking through what sound I wanted to achieve that I arrived at what I hoped were interesting sounds.

For example for the pad sounds I loaded a snippet of match box sound. pitched it way down, elongated the release eq'ed out the highs an lows - added reverb then sidechained a compressor to a high hat track to give it some movement. I think I then added some modulation delay

For drums I put samples in ultrabeat and used the pitch manipulation available there to achieve those sounds.

I combined this with parallel compresion/bit crusher for punch.

I looked at posting the instruments but there is a 2mb limit here on uploading stuff here. I could upload to my wensite but to be honest the instruments in isolation don't bear much resemblence to the finished sounds you hear.

does that help? :)

so you say...but then.....

that displays a level of logic technique that i am nowhere near.....

anyways, i'll make a start in a couple of weeks and then may plug you for some tech tips if stuck.....i have some ideas of a tune though

more than happy to answer if I can help.

It takes a few years to get your chops together but I've learnt a lot here from this forum. Do a search on parallel compression and sidechaining. Also really try to pay attention to what frequencies parts occupy so it's not muddy. This stuffs not going to be played in a club so Cut out everything below 40hz. or higher if possible ie filter out your hats - you can go really high with those and it's removing stuff that as part of a whole can really clog up a mix - same with the other end of the spectrum...........

Also it's great to be talking about making music rather than reading endless whining posts about apple or 7 v 8.

It's about the ideas and the sounds not the technology.

Thanks Evan,

I was lucky enough to be a session drummer for a while so I've got a bit of a head start on things in that department.

Any one else going to put something up - These kind of things can realy open your eyes to how diferent people approach the same problems - keep em coming

Can anyone point me in the right direction to find that Sound On Sound article we speak of?

yeah man, it's the most recent issue (the one with Logic 8 on the cover)

it took a while to get here (cincinnati) so it may not be where you live yet.

Evan
