Sonoma users: Is LiceCap still working for you?

I don't leave it running, I only run it when I want to capture something, and it immediately goes into capture mode as soon as it's run.

With it running in the menu bar, to start a new capture just left click on it's icon in the menu bar (Right-clicking on it gives you a menu), drag out a window selection and hit the record button.

After recording, you get a window where you can specify the size/FPS parameters you want, and then "Convert" to GIF. You can do this as many times as necessary to check the resultant GIF filesize/quality etc.

So how do I stop recording when I'm finished?

Surely doesn't happen here, a left click just displays the non-functional menu I showed a screenshot of... (right-click does nothing)

I'm trying this also here, thanks @des99 for the tip.

A left click pops up a dashed frame I can adjust to determine which part of my screen I can capture, along with a set of buttons including a big red record button at the bottom of my screen to start the recording.

When the recording starts, the Kap logo in the menu bar turns into a Stop button.

Another click on the same icon that started the recording (or the Escape key if Kap is still in key focus).

I don't see Kap's menu bar icon in your screen shot. Your screenshot shows what happens when you click on Sonoma's "Something is recording my screen" icon, which just shows you what is currently capturing your screen.

This is not Kap's menu bar icon.

This is what it looks like in the menu bar:

And while recording (it turns into a Stop button):

That icon vanishes after I start recording.

Esc does nothing

No such thing here

Neither that.

Weird.

In the past year or so, I started using the built-in QuickTime screen recording function.

To record GIFs?

It is not working for me anymore. Started around the same time as you posted this and still not working and I am lost without it.

It allows me to open it , click to record but then my mouse does not work within the box. Therefore, I cannot do any actions. If there is a video running it will still take all the photos so I have been recording videos to then record it as a gif

LiceCap still works for me here in macOS Sonoma 14.1. Sometimes you may have to click outside the box onto the Logic Pro background to give Logic Pro focus? Or use Command-Tab? Although right now I tested it and I didn't have to do that.

Kap is great too, although I still enjoy use LiceCap for the quick .gif.

I realize that I'm using LiceCap version 1.31, not the latest 1.32 version, maybe that's why we're having a different experience?

You can download LiceCap 1.31 under "Old Versions" at the bottom of the page: https://www.cockos.com/licecap/

Thanks a lot for that hint @David Nahmani, 1.3.1 indeed works on Sonoma. Problem solved. Kap is a lot more complicated if not convoluted to handle, especially if one does not use it daily and has to remember how it works every time.
