using logic 7 live on stage

Has anyone had any experience using Logic for gigs. I'm using a MAC BOOK PRO (2.16GHz Intel Core 2 Duo) using Logic 7 for backing tracks and to output accompanying films.

I’ve been warned of magnetism in PAs messing with the hardrive, nightmare electrical surges/spikes meddling with equipment etc...

Any tips or advice welcome...

That's an old wives tale. Regarding hard drives for stage use, vibration is the real enemy. If you place your rig near the bass cabinets or the drummers sidefills, HD seek and throughput is going to go to hell in a handbasket.

Other things to watch is static electricity, ground loops and surges/mains spikes, all of which can be dealt with by proper precaution and equipment.

thanks for that - is there any other way to reduce vibration other than onstage placement - would foam under the laptop help for instance?

Regarding the electricity problems, would a decent surge protector unit do the job?.. I've also thought about just using the laptop running from the battery.. do you think this would help?

just trying to cover every possible tthing that might go wrong! Do you use a laptop live yourself Fade8?

Cheers

I don't think you have to be that worried about vibration unless your placing it over the bass cabinet. I have used for years my PB with LP 7 just putting it over a solid place and it worked great. Running only from battery is definitely something you should NOT do. Battery should be there just for a power failure. And don't forget to set to "Better Performance" in Energy Saver control panel.

A decent surge protection and putting it over a firm and ventilated place will do the job.

Majorback is right, you don't have to do anything special, just be wary of it. Don't leave it on, or right in the path of a bass cabinet. Laptops already have shockmounted drives so they're already less susceptable to this then say, an external FW or SCSI drive is.

Sure, but nothing fancy. Laptops are by nature more resistant in this respect anyway. That battery is like a big capacitor.

cool - thanks alot guys

just one last question - would the buffer rate affect performance onstage?... all I am doing is playing 4 strips of audio with no plug-ins or effects and also playing videos alongside the audio within logic. This is fire-wired into my sound interface and then out to the various places..

Thanks alot!

Noel
