importing tracks from projects

I am a long time PT and Digital Performer user. Pro Tools has in "import session data" feature, where you can import anything you want from other Pro Tools sessions (PT Sessions=Logic Project). In Digital Performer, you can create "clippings" of tracks (audio and midi), or mixer channels, or anything else. These clippings can be pasted into other DP Projects.

I have been unable to find a way to do this in Logic 8. I tried dragging a Project file into the arrange window of another Project, but that doesn't seem to work. Let's say I have a bass track recorded in Project A. It's on it's own track/channel strip with all of the plug-ins and edits tweaked. I want to be able to import the bass track, with all of it's Plug-in settings, automation, etc. from Project A into Project B.

I expect that this feature must exist in Logic 8. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks so much!

The closest thing to this PT feature in logic, doesn't even come close to Pro tools "import session data"

1. Save the source track as a channel strip in the original project.

2. If you have any automation Use "Move current automation to region"

3. Copy the Regions from the source track

4. Close Source and open destination project

5. Load the saved channel strip in the new project.

6. Paste the Regions from the original project into the new project.

So for a whole project this can take some time, and is not entirely accurate.

I asked for something similar to this in the Suggestions Database forum. I put it in there because I had seen what DP was capable of with its "clippings" feature. I would love to see more of this functionality in Logic. At the moment, transferring items between projects is not that easy to do.

Cloggy, what you're talking about becomes a nightmare of sitting around waiting for minutes at a time if you have several VIs whose samples need to load up every time you switch between projects...

Well, I'm quite disappointed that this feature doesn't exist in Logic. It is SO useful to be able to import and export entire channel strips including all data, automation, audio , midi, etc. that's in the track. Somehow it doesn't seem possible that Logic can't do this. What dlerner suggests would really take a long time with great possibility for error. Guess I'm spoiled by the elegance of PT in this respect. But c'mon Digital Performer does a pretty good job with clippings. How can a program as mature as Logic lack this ability???

Thanks for the replies!

Since no one responded to my Suggestions post, I kind of figured it wasn't that important for anyone else. Glad to know I'm not alone here.

I'm a user of PT, DP and Logic as well, and the lack of any kind of Import Session data is kind of a bummer. My work around is to save the Channel Strips I'll want to use again and use the grab app or shortcut to take a picture of the arrange window with automation showing (not because I want to copy the track automation, but because the arrange window data seems to be more exact in terms of level than the mix view - which is another thing that kind of sucks). I wish that you could make a template from a finished session that didn't tie to the audio automatically - oh well.

Packing Folders with regions (audio or midi) seems like it could be helpful in this process. When you drag a folder into another project, tracks are created and the regions are placed as they were in the original. You still have to save and call up the individual track settings though, which is kind of lame if you are importing a lot of tracks.

I believe it was David who had mentioned that the way around this problem was to disable core audio while you're doing your copying between projects, that way all those samples/core audio initialisation etc. won't happen every time you switch between projects.

That clippings feature in DP sounds nice

Now I see why noone answered my post! D'oh! That makes perfect sense, and yet, it never occurred to me to do that. Thanks, Oddtime (David, vicariously)! Brilliant solution to that little problem.

Now, for the "Clippings"/"Session Data" thing, well, that's another issue and I agree that this would be a very useful feature.
